The performance "Noi vong tay lon" by the late artist Trinh Cong Son in the TV show "Vang mai khuc khai hoan" caused mixed reactions. Besides the opinion supporting this as a way to pay tribute, many viewers opposed the recreation of his image using AI.
The TV program "Eternal Triumph" organized by Vietnam Television (VTV) took place at three locations: Ho Chi Minh City, Quang Tri and Hanoi and was broadcast live on VTV1 on the evening of April 27. The program recreated the heroic history of the nation, demonstrating historical lessons and solidarity, while highlighting the country's achievements throughout the journey of construction and development over the past 50 years.
The mashup performance One lap of Vietnam - Joining hands in a big circle closed the television bridge Forever the triumphant song. The performance featured the image of the late musician Trinh Cong Son as he played and sang the song Joining hands in a big circle.
It is worth mentioning that this is a product made by AI. Besides the opinions supporting the program's organizers, thinking that this is a way to pay tribute to the late musician, there are many viewers who oppose the recreation of his image using AI: "Making AI like this is really awkward and very uncomfortable to watch", "I object to using AI images", "Watching the video makes me a bit scared"...
Some viewers reacted because the AI-recreated image of the late musician was not meticulous, the body proportions were not suitable, and it damaged his image: "Actually, using technology to recreate the deceased is not new, it has been around for a long time, but perhaps the organizers were a bit careless this time", "Does everyone see the strange way the index finger plucks the keys? The head is too big compared to the body"...
Sharing about this issue, Ms. Trinh Vinh Trinh - sister of musician Trinh Cong Son - affirmed that the station had asked for permission from the family before using the image of the late musician on television.
"About 2-3 months ago, the family received an email from VTV with a request to use an AI-generated image of musician Trinh Cong Son to broadcast on the television program celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Liberation of the South and the reunification of the country. Our family supports and appreciates this because his image appears on the program celebrating the country's important holiday," Ms. Trinh Vinh Trinh shared.
The family representative understands the reasons for the mixed reactions and controversy. However, Ms. Trinh Vinh Trinh believes that all of that comes from the love for the late musician Trinh Cong Son. "All the sharing and reactions of the audience show deep concern and love for Mr. Son. We always appreciate all of that affection," Ms. Trinh Vinh Trinh stated.
The family of musician Trinh Cong Son has always respected the creativity of the director and the program's organizers. However, in the coming time, the family will carefully consider and review the image of the late musician Trinh Cong Son created by AI before it is used on television or social networks.
On VTV's side, the station said that the crew had thoroughly discussed the use of AI images and only did so after receiving the consent of the late musician's family. "The image of musician Trinh Cong Son was recreated on the stage of Vang mai khuc khai hoan, performing the song Noi vong tay lon duoi troi hoa binh. The use of images and voices in this performance was discussed and prepared very carefully by the crew and received the consent of the late musician Trinh Cong Son's family," VTV3 fanpage (with a blue tick) posted introducing this performance on the evening of April 27.
The program "Vang mai khuc khai trien" (Forever Triumphant Resounding) was attended by Party and State leaders at three ends of the bridge. At the Ho Chi Minh City bridge, a meeting and exchange of mementos took place between American veteran Adolph Novello and the family of martyr Kha Van Viet (who died in Quang Tri in 1967). The meeting and exchange of mementos with relatives right on the stage of the program was an emotional highlight of understanding, sympathy and the desire to close the past and look towards the future.
Forever the Triumphant Song consists of 3 chapters: The Desire for Peace, The Will for Independence and Unification, and We Proudly Go Up! Oh Vietnam, interweaving the past and the present, recreating the heroic history of the nation, highlighting the achievements of the country throughout the journey of construction and development.
