The case of actress Do Ji Won being arrested and blackmailed for 6 months, which happened in 1998, has suddenly been revived, stirring up a wave of strong controversy. The incident has caused netizens to raise questions about the issue of protecting the personal information of artists.
At the end of July 1998, actress Do Ji Won experienced the most terrifying days of her life. While in the underground parking lot of a sports center in Gangnam, she was approached by two strangers who threatened her and forced her to do as they asked. She was blindfolded, gagged, restrained, and stuffed into the trunk of a car, spending 5 haunting hours in a cramped space.
Two strangers drove Do Ji Wonâs car around Seoul, withdrawing mone.y from her account. After taking what little cash she had, they dropped her off in a residential area. It seemed like the end, but the nightmare continued.
Somehow, they got hold of Do Ji Won's phone number and continued to blackmail her. Fearing for her family's safety, Do Ji Won transferred a large sum of mone.y to them. However, the criminals' greed did not stop. By November 1998, they continued to demand more mone.y. Realizing that continuing to compromise would only lead to a never-ending cycle of blackmail, Do Ji Won decided to report it to the police.
After the investigation, in the early morning of January 5, 1999, the police arrested two suspects, Yoo Deok Hyun (26 years old, unemployed) and Kwon Hyun Sook (25 years old, lecturer). Yoo Deok Hyun's words at the investigation agency shocked public opinion.
He confessed that he targeted Do Ji Won after picking up a notebook that had been dropped by a television writer. The notebook contained detailed contact information and schedules of 300 artists. From there, Yoo Deok Hyun conspired with Kwon Hyun Sook to commit the crime. Police also discovered that the two suspects planned to blackmail 20 other actresses if the deal with Do Ji Won was successful.
The Do Ji Won incident exposed a serious flaw in the security of personal information of artists. The fact that a notebook containing sensitive information of hundreds of celebrities easily fell into the wrong hands raises questions about the responsibility of management companies, television stations and even the artists themselves in protecting their information.
The fact that this case is being brought up again at this time has sparked even more controversy. Some public opinion believes that this is a necessary reminder, helping to raise awareness among artists and the public.
In the context of the Do Ji Won case being revived, public opinion cannot help but think of the recent case of actor Vuong Tinh who went missing and was detained at the Thai-Myanmar border area. Although the two cases are different in nature, they both show that artists, especially those working abroad, are facing potential risks regarding security and information confidentiality.
The case of Vuong Tinh shows that bad guys can take advantage of the gullibility and desire for job opportunities of artists to lure them into carrying out illegal plots. Meanwhile, the case of Do Ji Won shows that artists' personal information can easily be leaked and exploited for bad purposes. This coincidence makes the public worried and raises the question: Are these just random coincidences, or are they a sign of an alarming trend, when artists are increasingly becoming targets of crime?
