After the declaration of martial law caused turmoil in South Korea. The people were again stirred by President Yoon Suk-yeol's less than 2-minute apology - Will it be enough to calm the anger of the Korean people?
Specifically, last weekend, South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol publicly apologized after deciding to declare martial law in a tense situation.
President Yoon Suk-yeolâs apology lasted less than two minutes, a very short time for a public apology. The apology did not provide any specific information about the mistakes or the real reasons for the decision to declare martial law. While his words appeared to be an admission of responsibility, they lacked details and were not clear enough to be convincing to the people.
A wave of anger and resentment quickly arose over the dissatisfaction with the apology. Many felt that the lack of sincerity and brevity of the speech added to the public disappointment. Most felt that in serious situations, a longer, more in-depth speech was necessary to demonstrate sincerity and commitment to making amends.
Within hours of the speech, Korean social media was flooded with negative comments. People expressed their frustration with the President's unserious attitude, and spoke out about the haste and lack of respect in making such a brief apology. The keywords "National Address" and "Content of the Speech" trended on Korean social network X today.
To easily feel the brevity of this apology, some social media users compared it to daily activities. Many users expressed anger at Mr. Yoon's speech. "A short national speech", "I timed it and it lasted 1 minute and 56 seconds", users commented on social media.
One Twitter user commented: "If you can spend time speaking at hours-long events, how can you spend only 2 minutes apologizing to the whole country?"
One person asked, "Since when are state of the nation addresses just two-minute videos?" Another user said that as soon as he turned on the TV to watch, the President's speech had already ended.
"Even cooking noodles is not that fast," one user compared. "People have been struggling for days under martial law and he calls this two-minute speech an apology," "Is he mocking the people?" "Can't he stand for more than two minutes?" others said.
One user noted that on X, free accounts are allowed to post videos that are up to 2 minutes and 20 seconds long. If they exceed that length, the video will be cut off. "But the national address doesn't need to be cut off. How silly," he commented. Others noted that on the messaging app KakaoTalk, when a message is long, users have to tap "view full text," but when the President's full speech is sent as a message, users can immediately read it in full.
The decision to declare martial law was a drastic step in the context of the tense political situation in South Korea. However, this move quickly met with strong opposition from the opposition and civil organizations. This decision also raised concerns about the government's excessive use of power.
President Yoon Suk-yeol's brief apology was not enough to ease the anger and frustration of the Korean people. Lacking sincerity and clarity, the speech further deepened the divide between the government and the public, and the relationship between the government and the people is becoming more tense than ever.
