During a surprise inspection, Ho Chi Minh City Market Management forces discovered a business storing over 18 tons of beef offal and beef of unknown origin and without inspection certificates, raising concerns about food safety in the area.
On January 14th, according to information from the Ho Chi Minh City Market Management Department, Team 9 of the Market Management Department, in coordination with the People's Committee of Hiep Binh Ward, conducted a surprise inspection of a food business in the area. This unexpected inspection uncovered a serious case involving food of unknown origin, posing numerous risks to consumer health.
At the scene, authorities discovered and seized a total of 17,461 kg of beef offal and 1,320 kg of beef. All of these goods lacked invoices and documents proving their origin, and were not labeled as required by regulations. The total value of the seized goods was determined to be over 749 million VND. Immediately afterward, the inspection team drew up a report, sealed, and temporarily detained all the confiscated goods for processing according to the law.
According to representatives from the Ho Chi Minh City Market Management Department, the trade in smuggled goods and "three-no" goods (no origin, no invoice, and no label) is becoming increasingly complex. More worryingly, the infringing goods are not limited to clothing or household items, but also include food – a product group that directly impacts human health and life.
"Food of unknown origin not only poses a risk of poisoning and illness but also erodes consumer confidence in the market and creates unfair competition for legitimate businesses," the representative of the Sub-Department emphasized.
In reality, offenders often organize small-scale production, collection, and distribution. They hide goods in rented rooms, individual houses, or temporary, non-permanent cold storage facilities. This sophisticated tactic makes inspection and monitoring by authorities difficult, requiring inter-agency coordination and more decisive action.
The issue of unsafe food and food lacking three essential ingredients (no trace elements, no labeling, no quality control, no safety standards, no safety certification, no safety certification, no safety certification, and no safety certification) is becoming a major challenge for market management. This is not just a matter of penalizing a few violations, but a long-term, complex battle requiring the joint efforts of the entire political system and society as a whole.
In addition to increasing unannounced inspections, authorities need to step up public awareness campaigns about the dangers of consuming food of unknown origin. When consumers understand the risks, they will proactively say no to unregulated goods, thereby helping to curb the spread of unsafe food.
Consumers also need to be equipped with the knowledge to identify safe products. Specifically, they should be wary of unusually cheap items, those without labels, or those lacking clear information. Instead, they should prioritize buying food at supermarkets, stores, wholesale markets with proper controls, or establishments that have been granted food safety certifications.
Currently, the government is gradually building a centralized food traceability system. This tool allows for the transparency of product information, making it easier for people to check the origin of products and participate in market monitoring. This is also an important driving force for promoting digital transformation in the food industry.
