Nguyen Van Thien's "outrageous" music video, released before his arrest, continues to attract discussion on social media, especially as the self-assertive statements in this musical product are juxtaposed with the latest legal developments related to the 1998-born "CEO."
On the afternoon of December 9th, the Investigation Police Department of Hanoi City Police issued a decision to prosecute and detain Nguyen Van Thien, residing in O Dien commune, Hanoi, for the crime of disturbing public order.
Prior to his arrest, Nguyen Van Thien was well-known on social media for his music video "Tong Tai Times-City," released on November 1st. Although not a professional singer, Thien promoted the product as a foray into singing, calling it "a declaration of a man emerging from the storm."
The music video immediately attracted a large number of comments, not only about the legal story surrounding the character but also because of the "CEO" image that Thien built for himself against the backdrop of rap and hip-hop music.
The introduction to the music video garnered much attention as Thien repeatedly mentioned his journey of overcoming difficulties, using phrases like "turning pain into strength," "rewriting destiny," and strong statements such as "Class doesn't need likes - just vibe," and "I don't need a crown - I need a legacy." These self-assertive words quickly became a topic of discussion on various platforms.
However, it was the lyrics that drew the most mixed reviews for the music video. Many viewers felt the lyrics were overly sentimental, revolving around the familiar "overcoming adversity to become a star" trope, and repeatedly emphasized self-esteem. The use of many disjointed English words felt incoherent, more like lyrics written with a script than a handwritten composition.
Phrases like "Anti-fans write statuses - I write programs," "I don't flex - I do facts," or "I don't need a crown - I need a legacy" constantly appear, leading many viewers to comment that the music is overshadowed by the attempt to portray the "CEO" image. The melody and content revolve around the concepts of spotlight, drama, brand, or the Times City image, which are repeated many times, resulting in a monotonous and uninspired feel.
The MV's outro continues the distinctive, personal style with lines like "The CEO didn't come to explain himself - only to rewrite destiny" or "From storm to star - still the same name." These lines were widely shared after news of Thien's arrest spread, due to the contrast between the confident, even somewhat exaggerated, image in the MV and the legal reality Thien is facing.
The music video "Times-City CEO" has therefore become a frequently discussed topic among netizens in recent days. Many believe that the contrast between the showy musical product and the investigative plot creates a stronger negative effect, causing the MV to continue spreading despite its unimpressive artistic quality.
Currently, authorities are still investigating and clarifying the role of Thien and those involved in the disturbance on September 17th. While awaiting the final outcome, the music video "Tong Tai Times-City" continues to be commented on and shared, becoming one of the most attention-grabbing products on social media both before and after Thien's arrest.
