The act of infringing on film copyright has once again become the focus of public attention when recently, the Department of Cyber Security and High-tech Crime Prevention and Control - Ho Chi Minh City Police has issued a decision to severely sanction a case of illegal film distribution. The subject was identified as T.V.P, born in 2004, residing in Ho Chi Minh City. Ho Chi Minh City, who directly turned the film being released in theaters into his own money-making tool in cyberspace.
According to recorded information, the movie "Rabbit!" was receiving great attention from the audience in theaters nationwide when it was suddenly secretly filmed and cut mercilessly. Short clips from 60 to 120 seconds appear densely on the TikTok account called "Rabbit!". Not only stopping at interacting, the subject also boldly sold the full recording of the film through secure messaging applications such as Telegram and requested a transfer to a personal account.
At the police office, this young man admitted to creating a series of virtual accounts for the purpose of posting about 45 secretly recorded videos. After attracting a significant number of viewers, P. collected these pieces into a complete film to sell to those who wanted to watch "pirate" at a cheap price. Up to the time of discovery, at least 11 people had made a transaction to buy films from this subject, causing significant damage to the production and distribution unit.
Public opinion expressed dissatisfaction with the unconscious action of a young person. Many people believe that the secret filming and distribution of films is not only an act of stealing gray matter but also directly kills the country's cinema. While the producer has to spend tens of billions of dong and the efforts of a whole team, objects like T.V.P blatantly profit with just a few simple cuts on the phone.
Based on the obvious violations, the authorities have issued a decision to sanction administrative violations against T.V.P. with an amount of 7.5 million VND. This penalty is based on regulations on the provision and sharing of works of art without the consent of the intellectual property owner. At the same time, all infringing accounts and pirated film content were also forced to be removed immediately to prevent wider spread.
This incident is a strong wake-up call for the online community, especially young people who are intending to make money from copyright infringement. The Ho Chi Minh City Police also recommended that people need to raise their awareness of respect for the law when participating in the digital environment. Any act of secretly filming or sharing non-copyrighted content can be prosecuted for administrative or criminal liability depending on the severity.
The drastic action of the authorities in protecting intellectual property rights has received enthusiastic support from the genuine audience. To have a healthy online environment, not only the involvement of the police but also the drastic boycott of users is needed for pirated websites and accounts. Be a cultured viewer and know how to respect the artist's labor.
