A luxury vacation in Bali (Indonesia) quickly turned into a case that shook international public opinion, when a Ukrainian tourist was found to have been brutally attacked with a series of mysterious episodes.
The incident began to attract attention in February, when a shocking video went viral on social media. In the video, a boy named Igor Komarov appears with multiple bruises on his body and a panicked face. He said he was kidnapped and kicked out of his involvement in a multimillion-dollar financial dispute.
According to the content of the video, the group believed to be behind the incident demanded that Komarov's family pay a ransom of $10 million in exchange for his life. The pleas for help in the clip quickly attracted international public attention and sparked many speculations about the criminal network behind the incident.
On February 26, locals discovered several pieces of strange objects in the area near the mouth of the Wos River, on Bali's Ketewel Beach, suspected to have come from Komarov. About a week later, Indonesian police announced that the results of the examination confirmed that these parts of the object all belonged to Komarov.
According to media sources from Russia and Ukraine, Komarov is believed to be the son of Sergei Komarov, a well-known figure among billionaires in the city of Kramatorsk. At the time of the incident, Komarov was reportedly on vacation in Bali with his girlfriend - Ukrainian blogger Eva Mishalova and a friend named Yermak Petrovsky.
Petrovsky was identified as the son of Dnipro businessman and criminal influencer Alexander Petrovsky, often referred to as "Narik". However, it should be noted that Petrovsky has never been formally convicted of any crime.
In the ransom video as well as a number of related articles, Komarov is believed to be in contact with phone fraud centers operating in Dnipro. These centers allegedly specialize in targeting the elderly to carry out financial scams.
According to Komarov in the video, the call centers operate under the "protection" of Alexander Petrovsky and are shielded by several individuals in law enforcement and local authorities. However, those allegations have not yet been confirmed by the authorities.
Another video allegedly taken on February 19 shows Komarov in a seriously injured state. He appeared with many strange marks on his face and body, saying that he was taking medication because his legs and ribs had been "impacted", his chest had been attacked by the bad guys with sharp objects and was at risk of serious infection.
In the clip, Komarov repeatedly begged his parents to transfer a ransom of $10 million. He said the money was actually what his arrestees believed his family had taken from a criminal organization behind a large-scale fraud network. Komarov also described the kidnapping group as a very tight-knit organization, and warned that no one could intervene, including the police or other gangs. He urged the family to transfer the money to designated crypto wallets, saying it could be his only chance to save his life.
According to media reports, Komarov was taken away while in Bali with Petrovsky and Mishalova, after their locations were revealed on social media. Some journalists have suggested that the criminal group may have tracked down Mishalova's location-based posts. However, this information has not been officially confirmed. Reports also said that Komarov was taken away, while Petrovsky and Mishalova escaped in time.
According to Indonesian police, Komarov was forced into a car while riding a motorcycle in the Jimbaran area of Bali. Authorities have identified the six suspects as foreigners who are believed to have left Indonesia and are wanted internationally. Currently, the real motive of the case is still being investigated. Information related to the $10 million ransom or possible involvement of international organizations has not been officially confirmed by the authorities.
