Public opinion is interested in the case of Mr. Nguyen Thanh Hai, often called the "street knight", who was prosecuted and detained by the Investigating Police Agency, Ho Chi Minh City Police for being involved in a serious crime ring.
Mr. Hai, 54, emerged with the image of a person claiming to save Vietnamese people who was tricked into going to Cambodia to work and often appeared on social networks with "rescue" clips. However, the results of the investigation determined that he and his accomplices took advantage of this name to commit serious violations of the law, causing frustration in public opinion.
According to the Ho Chi Minh City Police, from 2023 until the discovery, Mr. Nguyen Thanh Hai's group has committed many organized crimes, taking advantage of the name of "rescuing people" to collect money from many people according to sophisticated tricks. The activities under investigation include extortion of property, fraudulent appropriation of property, human trafficking, organization and brokerage for others to illegally enter and exit and take advantage of democratic freedoms to infringe upon the legitimate rights and interests of organizations and individuals. These are the 5 crimes that the investigating agency has prosecuted against Mr. Hai along with 40 other subjects.
Specifically, the investigating agency determined that Mr. Hai's group had robbed the property of about 120 people, with a total amount of more than 16.7 billion VND, of which Mr. Hai was said to have benefited more than 2.2 billion VND. Active helpers in the line were also identified as well aware of criminal acts but continued to support and benefit illicitly from these activities. The detection, prosecution and arrest are considered the feat of the Criminal Police Division in the fight against organized crimes and the use of high technology.
During the investigation, the authorities also coordinated with units under the Ministry of Public Security, the Representative Agency of the Ministry of Public Security of Vietnam in Cambodia and the Cambodian Police force to arrest and rescue many victims who are Vietnamese citizens in the O'Smach area, Oddar Meanchey province (Cambodia) - where this group organizes illegal activities. At least 38 people have been rescued and brought back to Vietnam during these coordinated rounds. This shows the transnational nature of the line and the seriousness of the case.
According to the initial testimony of the defendants at the investigating agency, the group's trick was to build a cover of "free rescue" and then use social networks to build a personal image, claiming to be a "knight to save people". After building trust with the community, they asked the victims and their families to "ransom" with the inflated money, for the purpose of illicit profits. At the same time, they organize or broker for others to enter and exit the country illegally, which increases the risk of breaking the law in cross-border activities.
The prosecution and temporary detention of Mr. Nguyen Thanh Hai on October 30, 2025 was carried out by the Ho Chi Minh City Police Investigation Agency on the basis of the collected documents and evidence, demonstrating the determination to strictly handle violations of the law, not excluding any subject despite having a reputation in the community. Also prosecuted with Mr. Hai were Mr. Le Van Thanh and 9 accomplices, related to acts of extortion of property, organization, illegal entry and exit brokerage and abuse of democratic freedoms. The investigating agency has expanded the case, prosecuting a total of 41 defendants with the above-mentioned criminal acts.
The case is being investigated by the Investigating Police Agency of Ho Chi Minh City Police to continue to investigate, expand, clarify relevant circumstances and handle in accordance with the law. Authorities also recommend that people should be wary of groups of individuals claiming to organize rescue and rescue for profit, especially related to cross-border activities without authority or licenses as prescribed.
