Once famous for the image of a "knight" specializing in rescuing victims who were tricked into going to Cambodia, TikToker Huynh Cao Cuong and his accomplices have just been arrested by the Ho Chi Minh City Police. Ho Chi Minh City prosecuted, arrested and detained, revealing a large-scale criminal ring hiding in the shadow of humanitarian activities.
On January 1, public opinion was shaken by the information that the Ho Chi Minh City Police. Ho Chi Minh City successfully dismantled a criminal ring related to "knight" Nguyen Thanh Hai and TikToker Huynh Cao Cuong. A total of 40 subjects were arrested for investigation of 5 serious crimes: Stealing property; Fraudulent appropriation of property; Human trafficking; Organizing or brokering for others to illegally exit or enter the country; Abusing democratic freedoms to infringe upon the interests of the State, the legitimate rights and interests of organizations and individuals.
"Scenario" with millions of views and virtual aura on social networks
Before being arrested, Huynh Cao Cuong was a cult name on social networks with a TikTok channel with more than 371,000 followers. With the name "Huynh Cao Cuong – Duc Nang Thang No", this TikToker builds the image of a hero of compassion, ready to sacrifice himself to support Vietnamese people in distress in Cambodia.
On his personal page, Cuong constantly posts hundreds of video clips simulating dramatic rescue scenes. Footage of people crossing the border, tearful interviews with victims and promises of "free help" has attracted millions of views. Some clips even reached the 2.4 million views mark, helping Cuong gain full trust from families with relatives who are stuck in the country.
The truth behind the staged footage
However, behind those flashy clips is a dark reality. According to an investigation from the police, most of the content in Cuong's videos is staged and edited. The "pick-up" scenarios at the border are sophisticatedly staged to exaggerate the group's capabilities, the ultimate goal of which is to hit the anxiety of the victim's relatives.
Although they always declare "support without taking money first", "free rescue", the reality is completely the opposite. When the families actively contacted, Cuong and his accomplices would ask for detailed information, location and identification documents. After that, this group offered a "ransom" that was many times higher than the reality that the Cambodian side demanded to eat the difference and illegally profit from the pain of others.
Serious violations of the law
The investigating agency determined that Huynh Cao Cuong and his accomplices carried out illegal border crossing through trails and openings in the Tay Ninh area (Moc Bai). More outrageously, the so-called "rescued" people were actually detained by this group after illegally crossing the border into Vietnam. They were only released when their families paid the full amount demanded by Cuong's group.
Taking advantage of social networks to build trust, then commit acts of human trafficking and extortion of property is a very sophisticated trick. The incident is a strong wake-up call for the online community against self-proclaimed "idols", hiding in the shadow of charity to commit acts of violating the law.
Currently, the case is still being investigated by the Ho Chi Minh City Police. Ho Chi Minh City continues to expand the investigation and clarify the role of each object in the line. The collapse of TikToker Huynh Cao Cuong's "empire" once again affirms: No drama can cover truth and justice.
Before being put in handcuffs No. 8, Huynh Cao Cuong was a strong "coverage" face on social networking platforms with a nickname associated with the causal philosophy of "Duc Nang Wins Number". With a tattooed appearance but often appearing with a clumsy but meaningful appearance, Cuong has built for himself a content ecosystem that hits the pain of families whose relatives have been tricked into going to Cambodia.
Each of Cuong's videos is not merely filmed, but invested as a short action film: from scenes of crossing forests, wading streams, crossing small borders to dramatic "pick-up" moments. It is the label of "support without taking money first" and the promise of "bringing people back 100% safely" that has become a magnet for victims who are in despair. However, the grim reality shows that it is all just a well-calculated drama. After flashy videos praising himself, Cuong turned to "forcibly" the price of poor families, turning the act of saving people into an illegal sale, taking money from his own compatriots in distress.
