HYBE Entertainment Group is going through a turbulent time with a series of consecutive scandals. From funeral wreaths in front of the headquarters to a crisis of confidence, HYPE is now facing a serious risk of facing a wave of anger from fans.
Recently, the image of funeral wreaths placed in front of HYBE headquarters has caused a stir in the online community. This is a strong protest from the Chinese fan community of Jungwon (ENHYPEN) regarding the dating rumors between him and Winter (aespa). The wreaths carry a message of intense anger towards Jungwon from fans. They feel betrayed and believe that their idol did not keep his promise.
The incident stemmed from dating rumors circulating on social media. Jungwon later went live to deny the rumors, stating that he was not dating and did not smoke. However, this explanation did not seem to appease the anger of some fans. The act of sending funeral wreaths, a strong form of protest in East Asian culture, showed the seriousness of the problem, indicating that the dissatisfaction had reached its peak.
This is not the first time HYBE headquarters has been "surrounded" by wreaths. Previously, the company had received similar "gifts" twice. Once was to protest HYBE's handling of the controversy with Min Hee Jin, related to BTS, and another time was to ask Suga to leave the group. These incidents show the growing dissatisfaction among the fan community with HYBE's management and artist management.
Before the funeral wreaths had even settled, HYBE was embroiled in another shocking scandal involving an internal report. An official revealed that the published document was just the âtip of the iceberg,â with a total length of up to 2,000 pages. If the entire document were made public, it could cause an âearthquakeâ for the entire Korean entertainment industry.
This report is said to contain insulting words, even "distorting the image" of not only HYBE artists but also artists from other companies. This has sparked a wave of indignation among Kpop artists and fans, creating an atmosphere of tension and mutual suspicion.
According to the information revealed, the report was written under the "direction" of Chairman Bang Si Hyuk, based on information gathered from online forums and social media, including X (Twitter). The report was then used as a reference for HYBE executives, many of whom came from the gaming industry and had little experience in the entertainment industry. This shows a lack of understanding of the specifics of the entertainment industry and how to manage artists.
Former ADOR CEO Min Hee Jin also voiced her objections to the objectivity of this report. She sent an email on April 16, pointing out that "The industry trend reports released weekly by Weverse Magazine's editor-in-chief K contain biased content and are not objective.
It is so biased that it raises doubts about whether it was distributed for some purposeful propaganda purpose." This warning suggests doubts about the real motives behind the compilation and use of the report, raising concerns about a deliberate media campaign targeting artists.
HYBE is facing a multi-faceted crisis, from fan backlash to allegations of internal misconduct. Funeral wreaths, internal reports, and outrage from industry officials have created a real "storm", seriously affecting the reputation and position of Kpop's No. 1 corporation.
