Korean media interviewed several entertainment industry insiders about HYBE's internal report, which contained criticism of other companies' artists. Blackpink is a typical example. YG girls were badly criticized.
Accordingly, HYBE has become the center of controversy after the company's "music industry report" was released in a recent National Assembly audit.
HYBE's chief operating officer and Belift Lab CEO Kim Tae Ho stated that the reports "are merely data monitoring and do not represent HYBE's stance."
The report mentioned HYBE's idols, along with harsh judgments about idols from other entertainment companies, especially regarding their looks.
The report also covers controversies surrounding personal lives, opinions from online communities, and marketing strategies.
Among the reviews, HYBE commented on a YG Entertainment group, attracting the attention of Korean netizens.
HYBE believes that the group's popularity started with their performance at Coachella and it seems that a similar strategy is being planned for them in the European market.
The article also mentioned that there was suspicious voting activity for the global popularity award at OOO (the award's name), with most of the invalid votes allegedly coming from OOOO (the name refers to when writing about a group). This could be due to interference from their international fandom.
This comment is speculated to be referring to Blackpink. HYBE was criticized for implying that Blackpink's success was solely due to their performance at Coachella, undermining the group's current popularity.
The audience thinks that Blackpink has been successful since their debut with Whistle and Boombayah, then they entered Billboard's Bubbling Under Hot 100 with As If It's Your Last and Ddu-Du Ddu-Du. So, is performing at Coachella just the beginning of their success? Is that why HYBE tried to send LE SSERAFIM to Coachella?" (meaning HYBE also sent the group they manage to Coachella to seek fame).
Other netizens joined the conversation and shared their opinions on HYBE's alleged stance on Blackpink's success.
"What nonsense are they saying? Is Blackpink's success from Coachella?" or "HYBE should have given their group a lot of practice before sending them to Coachella"; "Blackpink was already famous before Coachella" - these are the comments of the audience about the incident.
However, in another development, an anonymous employee - A affirmed that "he has never seen a report document like HYBE's".
âTo monitor performance, you would typically analyze successful teams, reporting something like, âHere are the reasons why this team is doing well, so we need to improve in that area,â or âLetâs look at how this team responded to the crisis and see what we should pay more attention to.â That would be what you might call an industry trend report,â he explains.
A added that it was normal to spy on competing companies. However, A found it hard to believe that such an internal document was something that was sent to a senior executive.
Another employee - B, also asserted that compiling criticisms was an unprecedented activity.
"During my time working at many entertainment companies, I have never compiled data criticizing artists of other companies. Although it is true that I have checked the posts and reactions of the community when our artists debuted, taking note of negative expressions or rates, I have never reported on the opinions of each of those netizens.
HYBE asserts that the document released to Congress is a collection of provocative comments stitched together. But that doesnât take away from the fact that the content was still included in the document.
In the Kpop industry, if there are explicit criticisms of other artists in the report, they will be deleted. Besides, I think the information collected from online communities is a very vague data set to be used" - B shared.
A third employee - C, told JoyNews24 that most entertainment businesses see each other as competitors, but also partners. HYBE creating such a document is "disrespectful and demeaning to other Kpop artists".
"There are cases where we share verbal reviews about artists and rival companies. But this is the first time I've encountered a case where negative reviews were turned into official reports. This is very dangerous," C emphasized.
