Hanoi: Typhoon Yagi thunderstorm kills trees, chaotic traffic

The violent thunderstorm suddenly came to Hanoi this afternoon, causing many people to not have time to turn back. In Hoang Liet ward, a large phoenix tree was uprooted and hit 2 people on a motorbike.

Accordingly, at about 3 p.m. on September 6, on Nguyen Huu Tho Street, Hoang Liet Ward, Hoang Mai District, Hanoi, a large phoenix tree with a diameter of about 40-50cm uprooted and fell, crushing a passing motorcycle. There was a woman and a man in the car at this time.

According to eyewitness accounts, the t.ai occurred when the man was carrying the woman from the direction of Giai Phong street to Nguyen Huu Tho. In the heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms, the phoenix tree suddenly fell, so they could not turn back and were crushed.

As a result, the woman sitting in the back left on the spot, while the man suffered severe hea.d injuries. Immediately after the serious t.ai, people called an ambulance to the scene for first aid and took the man to the hospital.

Functional forces were also promptly present at the scene to investigate the cause of the incident. Through initial observation, the stump of the phoenix tree showed signs of decay, so it could not stand in the rain and wind.

Currently, the work of overcoming the scene and searching for relatives of the victims is still being carried out urgently, in order to ensure traffic safety as well as to clearly investigate the cause of this unfortunate incident.

In the previous development, the news broadcast at 14:30 of the National Center for Hydrometeorological Forecasting said that through monitoring on satellite images, lightning positioning data and weather radar images, convective clouds began to form over Bac Ninh province. This cloud tends to move southwest and expand to the inner city of Hanoi.

In the coming hours, districts in Hanoi such as Tay Ho, Long Bien and Gia Lam districts will have showers and thunderstorms, then expand to other inner districts of the city. In thunderstorms, there is a possibility of tornadoes, lightning and strong gusty winds.

According to records, at more than 15 o'clock in the area of Huynh Thuc Kang street (Dong Da district), the tornado accompanied by strong gusts of wind made pedestrians panic. Many people then quickly ran into large buildings in the shelter area. Many shops around the area also immediately cleaned up their tables and chairs before the thunderstorm came.

This phenomenon has been warned by the National Center for Hydrometeorological Forecasting due to the recent ho.t weather in the capital and the Northern provinces. Mr. Hoang Phuc Lam (Deputy Director of the National Center for Hydrometeorological Forecasting) said that ho.t weather is not a favorable condition for storms to enter or not enter the North.

However, being in ho.t conditions when it turns to rain, specifically rain before the storm on September 6 in the Northeast and Hanoi, it will lead to more risks of thunderstorms, tornadoes, and lightning.

According to information from the National Center for Hydrometeorological Forecasting, at 16:00 on September 6, the center of storm No. 3 was at about 19.9 degrees north latitude; 110.8 degrees east longitude, on the mainland northeast of Hainan Island (in China); about 420 km east-southeast of Quang Ninh. The strongest wind in the area near the center of the storm is strong at level 16 (i.e. about 184 - 201 km/h), gusting above level 17, moving in a west-northwest direction, with a speed of 15 - 20 km/h.

Due to the influence of Super Typhoon Yagi, from the night of September 6 to 9, in the Northern region and Thanh Hoa, there is a possibility of a heavy rain, locally very heavy rain and thunderstorms with a common total rainfall of 100 - 350 mm, in some places over 500 mm (the heaviest rain in the Northeast is concentrated during the day and night of September 7, in the west of the North from the evening of 7 - 9/9).
