Jay Chou's concert in Taiwan last year was sold out within minutes of going on sale. This scarcity was exploited by a couple in Kaohsiung to commit large-scale profiteering.
When Jay Chou opened the online ticket portal for the 4-night Carnival World Tour in Taipei, all 150,000 tickets for the show were sold out in just 5 minutes. The next day, the male artist opened the ticket portal for 3,000 more tickets but they were also sold out in just 1 minute. It is estimated that there were about 800,000 accounts accessing to buy tickets.
Although there were a lot of tickets, many people were disappointed that they could not get their hands on the tickets they wanted. Speculators raised the price of the highest class ticket from NT$6,880 to NT$69,000, more than 10 times the original price. The black market price of tickets even reached NT$300,000.
This unstable situation has forced Jay Chou to warn audiences to be careful with this fever, as tickets may be overpriced or fake. Therefore, everyone needs to be careful to avoid being scammed.
As expected, according to information from the Qiaotou Procuratorate and the Kaohsiung Police Department, the subject surnamed Huang and his girlfriend surnamed Trang created a Facebook account, posting in concert ticket buying and selling groups with the offer to sell or buy tickets for Jay Chou.
Because of trust, many fans transferred cash or bank transfers to book tickets. However, after receiving the money, the two did not deliver the tickets as promised. Instead, they created a scenario blaming an "assistant named Tran" for running away with the money. In reality, the couple quickly withdrew all the money and traveled to Korea, even staying in a 5-star hotel.
The investigation results showed that the number of victims was up to 73 people, spread across Taiwan. The total amount of money that Hoang and Trang had appropriated was estimated at 614.9 million won (equivalent to more than 11 billion VND). There were cases where students brought hundreds of millions of VND in cash to the place to "ask" to buy tickets but were also cheated out of everything.
After determining that their behavior was serious, the police stopped both of them at the airport when they returned from Korea. The prosecutor later confirmed that there was no "assistant Tran" as previously stated.
Prosecutor Lam Tuan Thanh said the couple were accused of "fraudulent appropriation of property", with aggravating circumstances due to the large sum of money and the organized method. The case file has been completed and submitted to the court, and the prosecution has requested a specific sentence of 5 years in prison.
Investigators are calling on other victims who have evidence to report the incident as soon as possible. At the same time, the authorities are reminding people to be vigilant against information about ticket sales on social networks, especially for big concerts that are often "sold out", to avoid becoming victims of scams.
Despite the unexpected incident, this also proves the attraction of Jay Chou's concerts. The explanation for this concert ticket fever must come from his position as the "king of Chinese pop music" who has accompanied the youth of the 8X and 9X generations, his ability to sell out concert tickets in an extremely short time, and his ability to maintain his influence over more than two decades of artistic activities, despite many changes in the music market.
24 years into the profession, Jay Chou's music is ahead of its time, influencing many countries in the East Asian region in general and Vietnam in particular, such as Su Thanh Hoa, Da Khuc, Huong Lua, Thien Ly Chi Ngoai, Hen Uoc Dandelion, Toc Nhu Tuyet, Lu Khach Chan Troi, Dong Phong Pha.
Not only is he a singer/songwriter, Jay Chou is also a pianist, music and film producer, actor, director, and art collector. His album Greatest Works of Art became the world's best-selling album in 2022, the title track video attracted more than 140 million views on Weibo in just one day, and the album has accumulated more than 1 billion views on various platforms. The International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) recorded Jay Chou's physical and digital album sales as the world's top in 2022, surpassing BTS and Taylor Swift.
