Striker Nguyen Dinh Bac said that the only goal that helped Vietnam U23 defeat Saudi Arabia U23 was carefully planned in advance by coach Kim Sang-sik, stemming from tactical adjustments and his special role when he came onto the field.
Vietnam U23 pulled off a major upset by defeating Saudi Arabia U23 1-0 in a crucial group stage match. The only goal of the game was scored by striker Nguyen Dinh Bac, wearing jersey number 7, after a daring move and a surprising shot from a tight angle that left the opposing goalkeeper with no chance to react. This moment of brilliance not only showcased Dinh Bac's individual talent but also clearly reflected the tactical genius of coach Kim Sang-sik.
Dinh Bac's goal came at a time when the Vietnam U23 team was facing significant difficulties against an opponent considered superior in physique, stamina, and speed. In fact, the goal wasn't a spontaneous moment but part of a carefully planned strategy by the coaching staff. After the match, the striker, who plays for Hanoi Police FC, revealed the specific instructions given to him by coach Kim Sang-sik when he was brought on in the second half, in a role completely different from his previous playing style.
"After two exhausting matches, the coaching staff instructed us not to push the formation too high. The coach reminded me that when I came onto the field, I had to defend a lot and move to the wing when I had the chance. I followed his instructions exactly, moving to the wing to receive the ball and scoring a goal," Dinh Bac shared. This statement shows the young player's strict adherence to tactics, as well as his ability to capitalize on opportunities at the right time.
Earlier in the first half, coach Kim Sang-sik fielded a three-forward lineup consisting of Nguyen Ngoc My, Le Viktor, and Nguyen Cong Phuong. However, this completely new attacking trio faced considerable difficulties against the physically strong and fast-paced defense of the Saudi Arabian U23 team. Although the Vietnamese U23 team played the ball quite smoothly from their own half and maintained the necessary composure, when they brought the ball into the opponent's half, their final touches lacked sharpness and failed to create sufficient pressure.
Entering the second half, the coaching staff made important adjustments. Nguyen Le Phat and Dinh Bac were brought onto the field, bringing new life to the attack. Both players possess good tackling ability, maintain possession, and are willing to drop deep to support the defense.
Sharing more about his feelings after the victory, Dinh Bac emphasized the collective element in the team's overall success. "The match against the host team, U23 Saudi Arabia, was not easy at all. U23 Vietnam tried to be united, everyone was in agreement. Today's achievement is the result of the collective effort," he said.
In defense, the U23 Vietnam players also had a courageous day. Defender Pham Minh Phuc affirmed the team's unwavering spirit against a strong opponent. "U23 Vietnam played resiliently against the strong attacking power of U23 Saudi Arabia. They played with high intensity. The whole team fought with the Vietnamese spirit, fiercely, calmly, and overcame difficulties. U23 Vietnam overcame a difficult group stage, and now will focus on the quarter-final match with the same fighting spirit as the final," Minh Phuc shared.
