Although they are from the same family, NewJeans is not as valued by HYBE as ILLIT. The proof is that since the conflict with Min Hee Jin, the girls have had to swim alone in the sea of drama.
Recently, NewJeans has been repeatedly plagiarized. People are worried that the above series of scandals will sink the group's career.
Specifically, the song "Bubble Gum" by NewJeans was accused of illegally "copying" three classic songs "Easier Said Than Done" released in 1981.
Amid the controversy surrounding plagiarism allegations, veteran British jazz-funk band Shakatak took a tough step by hiring a music expert to clarify the suspicion of the group's song "Bubble Gum". Famous K-pop female NewJeans illegally "copied" the classic hit "Easier Said Than Done" released in 1981.
This move was made immediately after Ador, NewJeans' management company, denied all allegations related to copyright issues. On social networking site X, Shakatak sent thanks to fans and friends in Korea for sharing and commenting about "Easier Said Than Done" being used in some recent songs. At the same time, the band also announced that the publishing company Wise Music Group is actively handling the case and has hired experts to clarify everything.
Previously, Ador denied the accusations of plagiarism that Shakatak made. "Bubble Gum", a song on the album "How Sweet" released in May by NewJeans, was composed by 250, Oscar Bell and Sophie Simmons, names that contributed to the success of the "hit" songs. NewJeans' previous releases include: "Attention" and "Hype Bo.y".
Ador's side said that they received a letter from Shakatak on June 17 and gave an official response on June 21, affirming that "Bubble Gum" does not violate Shakatak's composition copyright and requested that the band He provided credible analytical reports to substantiate his allegations. However, Ador said that so far he has not received any reports from Shakatak.
Meanwhile, Wise Music Group, Shakatak's copyright representative company, has authorized a law firm in Korea to send a letter of complaint to Ador, HYBE (Ador's parent company), and the Korean Music Copyright Association. (KOMCA) and Sony Music Publishing Hong Kong, demanding to stop using "Bubble Gum" and pay compensation for copyright infringement of "Easier Said Than Done". Wise Music Group affirmed that the two songs have many similarities in melody, instruments, rhythm and tempo.
The suspicion of plagiarism was first raised on April 27, right when the music video "Bubble Gum" was released. Some social media users believe that the song's melody is similar to "Easier Said Than Done", while others believe that it may have used a sample from Shakatak's "hit".
This controversy has divided fans and music critics into two opposing opinions. Some people criticized Shakatak for making "baseless accusations", while others called for a thorough investigation to clarify the truth.
Music critic Kang Il-kwon spoke up, saying that Ador's request for Shakatak to provide evidence was unreasonable. He believes that the accused side is the one who needs to defend themselves.
