On March 18, two days after a Mercedes car crashed into a series of motorbikes in Thu Duc City (HCMC), causing the deat.h of Ms. HTTT (28 years old, living in Dong Nai), many colleagues, friends, and relatives of the femal.e studen.t could not help but grieve when talking about the unfortunate gir.l.
Speaking to Dan Tri newspaper, Mr. Tran Trung Hiep, project manager of Hear Us Now (a community supporting equal education for the deaf), knew Ms. T. since 2019 through a cultural exchange program between deaf clubs in Ho Chi Minh City.
In 2020, T. joined a sign language interpretation group with Mr. Hiep and some other interpreters at a company, with the aim of supporting deaf and hearing-impaired people in the city and neighboring provinces.
Mr. Hiep was impressed with T.'s pretty appearance and clear voice. "Inside her is a kind heart, living her life for the deaf and hearing-impaired community," said Mr. Hiep.
During the Covid-19 pandemic, T. participated in many community support projects such as vaccinating the deaf and hard of hearing, and conducting training sessions for the deaf and hard of hearing to protect themselves.
In 2022, T. will start studying Chinese at college, preparing for some other plans in the future.
"I really admire T. for choosing to study sign language, a path that doesn't promise much in the future. T.'s house is in Bien Hoa, Dong Nai province. Every day, he has to travel nearly 40km to Ho Chi Minh City to get to class. Throughout all those years, he has never once complained of being tired," said Mr. Hiep.
Regarding the job of interpreting for the deaf and hearing impaired, T. is always enthusiastic about the profession. Until 2024, T. is active in many projects of Hear Us Now, such as: Deaf Startup Project, Ho Chi Minh City Deaf Fair,...
Before the acciden.t, T. had been the main interpreter for a seminar on technology and ways to prevent online fraud for dozens of deaf people on the evening of March 17. However, on the afternoon of March 16, the collision took the gir.l's life.
"When we heard the news that T. died in a car acciden.t, everyone in the class was shocked. Some of them cried as if they had lost a loved one," Hiep said. On social media, many others also expressed their condolences for the sudden passing of the sign language interpreter.
"Thank you for always accompanying the deaf and hearing-impaired community for many years. Losing you, the community of kind people who have always strived for 3 million deaf people will certainly be very sad. I hope your family and loved ones will be strong to overcome this pai.n and loss...", the director of the Hear Us Now project wrote on his personal page.
On the morning of March 18, many friends in the sign language class were present to burn incense and see T. off on her final journey. Before that, at 5:15 p.m. on March 16, Ms. Ngoc drove a Mercedes car with license plate 51H - 699.XX on Vo Nguyen Giap Street, heading from Binh Thai intersection to Suoi Tien Tourist Area.
When arriving at Thu Duc intersection, Ms. Ngoc drove into the motorbike lane and collided with 5 motorbikes stopped at a red light. Then, the car ran the red light and collided with 5 motorbikes traveling from Vo Van Ngan Street to Le Van Viet Street. After causing the collision, the car drove about 50m more and then pulled over to the left side to stop. The incident injured 9 people, of which Ms. HTTT was in critical condition and died at the hospital.
The police measured Ms. Ngocâs alcohol concentration using a quantitative measuring device and recorded that Ms. Ngoc had an alcohol level of more than 0.6 mg/liter of breath. Initially, the authorities determined that Ms. Ngoc was driving under the influence of alcohol, was not paying attention, and drove in the wrong lane, causing the acciden.t.
On March 18, the Ho Chi Minh City Police Department prosecuted and temporarily detained Ms. Nguyen Thi Thanh Ngoc (born in 1984, residing in Thu Duc City) for violating regulations on road traffic participation.
