On March 29, the People's Court of Hanoi opened a trial and sentenced defendant Nguyen Thu Anh (51 years old, residing in Hai Ba Trung district, Hanoi) to 14 years in prison.

In court, defendant Nguyen Thu Anh repeatedly cried, saying that he did not intend to harm anyone, but just wanted to scare his brother. The fact that the fire broke out leading to a large fire was unexpected.

Declaring the source of the incident, Nguyen Thu Anh said, due to the impact of the Covid-19 epidemic, his income decreased, the defendant was a single mother, so he wanted to stay with his mother and younger brother's family to reduce the economic burden. economic. "The defendant loves his mother very much and doesn't want to harm her," Nguyen Thu Anh cried, apologizing to his family.

Participating in the trial, the defendant's mother was in a wheelchair, asking the jury for leniency for her daughter.

The jury said that the accused committed the crime from a petty conflict with his family. Instead of dialogue to resolve, the defendant set fire to commit the crime in a thug way, so the sentence should be pronounced as stated.
