Thai media reported that Bangkok police received a report at around 5:30 p.m. on July 16 from the Grand Hyatt Erawan hotel about the discovery of deceased tourists inside one of their hotel rooms.

Bangkok police also identified the suspect who harmed the Vietnamese group as Ms. Sherine Chong, 56 years old, of Vietnamese origin with American citizenship. Ms. Chong has entered and exited Thailand 5 times, the most recent entry being on July 5.
Ms. Chong was one of six people who died in the hotel room. The police's results of checking the hotel room entrance showed that there were no people outside the group involved.
Also according to the daughter of a victim, the incident may be related to Ms. Chong having a debt dispute with one of the victims.
According to Khaosod newspaper, one of the hotel waiters who contacted Ms. Chong before the incident said the suspect was alone in the room when food and drinks were brought. Ms. Chong's attitude at that time was very tense and quiet. When the hotel staff offered to make tea and coffee, Ms. Chong refused and said she would do it herself.
From the testimony of witnesses and images from the security camera system, Bangkok police identified Ms. Chong as the biggest suspect.
On the same day, Thai police also said they had located the 7th Vietnamese person involved in the incident, who was booked into a room with the 6 victims. Accordingly, this person left Thailand and returned to Vietnam on July 10.
