Recently, China has faced many major disasters, the epidemic has not subsided, now there is a terrible 6.8 magnitude earthquake that destroyed a village in Tibet, an estimated 1,000 houses have been destroyed by the earthquake.
According to the People's Police, the earthquake that occurred at 9:05 a.m. (local time) on January 7 shook Dingri County in Shigatse in the Tibet Autonomous Region (China). The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) said the earthquake had an epicenter at a depth of about 10 kilometers in the Tibet area. The agency measured a shaking intensity of 7.1 on the Richter scale, while China recorded a magnitude of 6.8 on the Richter scale. 53 people were confirmed dead and 62 others were injured. About 1,000 homes were damaged in the Tingri district, where the epicenter was located. More than 1,500 rescue workers have been dispatched to carry out search and rescue missions.
According to Phap Luat Newspaper, there are 27 villages and about 6,900 people within a radius of 20 km from the epicenter. According to official data, Dingri County has a population of more than 61,000 people. Images shared on social media sho.w hundreds of houses collapsed due to the earthquake. Xinhua news agency reported that as of 3 p.m. on January 7 (local time), a magnitude 6.8 earthquake in Tibet had killed 95 people and injured 130 others.
Tseyang Lhamo, a resident of Yupe village in Dinh Nhat district, said most of the houses in the village collapsed due to the devastation of the earthquake, including her house. Fortunately, all of her family members are safe.
"When I was about to wake up, it was also the time when the earthquake happened. My phone received an earthquake alert, so I woke up the whole family to quickly run out of the house. Soon after, our houses collapsed," Lhamo recounted the moment she and her family faced the earthquake.
"The aftershocks made me feel dizzy and nauseous, as well as having trouble moving. Even so, I still try to run to my family's barn to release the animals, in order to prevent them from getting hurt when the surrounding buildings collapse," Lhamo added.
Lhamo, along with his family, and many other villagers, then went to an empty area to sit and wait for the rescue team to arrive. Although the earthquake caused many buildings in Yupe village to collapse and shut down the power system, the phone signal and traffic system in the village were not greatly affected.
Wei Fulin, a receptionist at the Phuntsok Khangsang Hotel in Tibet, said that since the quake struck, about 40 to 50 guests have left. "Our hotel was not seriously affected, there were no casualties. However, the aftershocks of the earthquake caused some cracks in the walls," Wei said. According to experts working at the China Earthquake Network Center (CENC), there is still a possibility of an earthquake in Tibet in the coming days.
China's Ministry of Emergency Response Management announced that, in response to the damage caused by the earthquake in Tibet, the National Disaster Mitigation and Rescue Commission has upgraded the national disaster relief emergency response level to level 2. So far, more than 3,400 rescue workers and more than 340 medical personnel have been dispatched to the earthquake site to search and rescue people trapped in the rubble or injured by the earthquake.
According to Xinhua, the Chinese government has sent about 22,000 disaster relief items to the earthquake-stricken area, including cloth tents, warm clothing, blankets and folding beds, along with special relief materials for highland and cold areas. According to Thanh Nien Newspaper, immediately after the earthquake, the Chinese military deployed a drone to survey the epicenter area, according to the Western Theater of Operations of the Chinese People's Liberation Army.
The air force of the Western Theater of Operations also immediately activated an emergency disaster relief plan, organizing many transport aircraft, medical aircraft, helicopters and ground forces to be ready to respond.
