After 3 years since the first season of "Squid Game" was a resounding success, screenwriter Hwang Dong Hyuk said that the content in season 2 is "crazy", promising a large cast of characters, and the game is more nerve-wracking than part 1.
Attending a global promotional event for the new season in the Italian city of Lucca, Hwang Dong Hyuk said the third season is in post-production and revealed that the series will be released soon.
Back in 2021, Squid Game became Netflix's most-watched movie series of all time. In the drama category within the framework of the Emmy Awards, Hwang won the Best Director award, while the male lead Lee Jung Jae won the trophy for Best Actor. Both are the first Asians to win this title with a non-English work.
Fans expect the film to set a new record when the release date is set for December 26, 2024, the third and final part is also expected to be released in 2025.
As a writer, director, and producer, Hwang Dong Hyuk said that in season 2, the character Gi Hun (played by Lee Jung Jae) - who survived season 1, will return to the game. He did not come to win, but to end this game of life and death.
"This time there will be more characters and more attractive games, all of which deserve the love and support of the audience," he added.
The work continues to follow contestants who are burdened with money, participating in survival challenges with childhood games to have a chance to win big prizes.
Present at the event in Lucca, Lee Jung Jae shared that he was under pressure to improve his character. In part 1, Gi Hun is a gambler who used to be addicted to gambling, faced debts from usurious lenders, and has now become a different person.
The actor said he was surprised when he received the season 2 script because he didn't think so quickly. "I didn't think he would write it so fast, I really doubt it. But when I read the script, I saw that it was perfect, nothing needed to change. The script was so good that I had to be amazed and praise 'This man is a genius,'" Lee Jung Jae said.
At the early screening of the season 2 opening episode, director Hwang Dong Hyuk explained that something inside Lee Jung Jae's character "just been destroyed" after his time in the game.
"Gi Hun has gone through so many things, witnessed so many deaths, it's hard for him to go back to the way he was before, no matter how hard he tried. The way you see Gi Hun in season one and in season two is very different. This time he wants revenge. He wants to catch the people behind the game and wants to bring them to justice," the director shared. Lee Jung Jae admitted that returning to the set, with an almost completely new cast, was a "weird" feeling.
"In the first season, many colleagues put all their heart into it. After each round, we had to say goodbye to many people. All those memories rushed back to life when many characters died on the set, I felt like I was being dragged back to hell. I feel what the director has shaped for me and my character. As soon as I entered the set, I really hoped that many people would come back alive this time," he said.
Netflix has announced that Squid Game will end in season three, which is scheduled for release in 2025. Hwang Dong Hyuk explained why he ended so quickly.
"When I think of the idea for the ending, I want to have the ending naturally. I believe that with that story, I can tell everything I want thanks to Squid Game and also the perspective of the character Gi Hun. I see we don't need any other stories." As for the second part, the director only briefly described it with two words "crazy".
