It was thought that it would break through after the success of the first part, but Getting Rich with Ghosts: The War of the Seeds is bogged down again in a dragging script, superfluous events make the audience disappointed and disappointed.
Last year, Getting Rich With Ma shocked the box office when it reached more than 120 billion VND, and at the same time brought Artist Hoai Linh back to the big screen after a long absence. This success made director Trung Dwarf have the ambition to turn the project into a long-term brand, similar to Ly Hai's Flip Face model. And so Rich with Ghosts: The Battle of the Nuts was born. However, contrary to expectations, the second part only reached 47 billion VND after nearly a week, a number that is not small but far behind the previous part, showing obvious signs of slowing down.
Unlike the first part, the story in the second part is completely independent. The film opens with the sudden death of actress Anh Thu (Ngoc Xuan) in an incident. Thanks to a special camera, Mr. Pho (Artist Hoai Linh) can see her ghost. Anh Thu made a promise: if he and a group of friends including Ngo (Tuan Tran), the couple Dang (La Thanh) â Tien (Diep Bao Ngoc) and Giang (Vo Tan Phat) brought their bodies back to their hometown, she would give them a diamond ring worth 9 billion VND. From here, the journey of "getting rich with ghosts" continues to open.
Keeping the style of the previous installment, The Battle of the Nuts exploits the humor element as the center. The funny situations are diverse, sometimes reminiscent of Chau Tinh Tri's style â naïve, muddy but still make the audience laugh. Combined with the background of Western rivers, fields, islets and the hospitality of the people, the film brings closeness and grace.
However, later on, comedy pieces are abused, repetitive and lack of creativity. When laughter has become less effective, emotions â the factor that once created the resounding success of the first part â are not fully exploited. The father-son relationship between Mr. Phop and Yen or Anh Thu's motherhood is almost faint.
The first half of the film keeps the rhythm quite well, but the longer it goes, the more it becomes clear. Anh Thu's departure was clunkyly built, with many absurd details. The journey to bring her back to her hometown was filled with repeated "flips" and deceptions, leading to boredom. The main bottlenecks are too predictable, the villain is revealed early, and it does not create drama. The ending revolves around the 9 billion ring, which was expected to create a climax, but in the end it was faint and unconvincing.
The film gathers a familiar cast from the previous part such as Artist Hoai Linh, Tuan Tran, Diep Bao Ngoc, La Thanh. Hoai Linh returned to her knack for comedy, juggling naturally and creating laughter. Tuan Tran made an impression when he transformed into Ngo â a stupid but sincere boy.
Diep Bao Ngoc and La Thanh stopped at the level of round shoulders, but the characters are too one-colored: Tien loves money, often bullies her husband, and Dang is uncomfortably weak. Ngoc Xuan as Anh Thu was "lost" in a hugging script, lacking land to show her love for her child. On the contrary, Vo Tan Phat is an unexpected bright spot with an unpredictable character transformation, creating a rare drama in the film.
The War of the Seeds is not a cinematic disaster, but it is also difficult to leave a mark. The film still has charming comedy and beautiful Western scenery, but the length, predictable script and lack of emotional depth make the work a "instant noodle", quick entertainment and forgetfulness.
Trung Lun: The "dictatorial" director contradicted the actor, causing a backlash behind the scenes
An Nhiên21:54:09 02/08/2025Trung Dwarf went from a poor comedian to a dictatorial director. With extreme rigor and perfectionism, he creates hundreds of billions of films but also causes many behind-the-scenes conflicts.
