Although it is expected to be a summer fairy blockbuster in 2025, Mortal Tu Tien is disappointing when the viewership is flat, the content lacks breakthroughs, the characters are faint, and the script is shortened, making the film gradually lose its appeal.
As the most anticipated project in the summer of 2025, Pham Nhan Tu Tien once made the fairy tale movie loving community "sit still" right from the moment it was announced. Possessing a cult cast such as Duong Duong, Kim Than, epic techniques and a script that sticks to the famous original, the film is expected to be the "ace" on the summer TV track. However, the reality is completely the opposite: Mortal Cultivator only reaches views ranging from around 36-37 million per day, a disappointing number when compared to the Hidden Sea Story or the Snow Green Dynasty that are being screened at the same time.
The first and fatal minus of Mortal Tu Tien is that the script is shortened to only 30 episodes, while the massive original work spans thousands of chapters. As a result, the film becomes too fast, lacks depth and does not have enough time to exploit the cultivation journey of the main character Han Lap (played by Duong Duong).
The feeling of overcoming difficulties - which is the "specialty" of the fairy film series - becomes superficial. The male lead constantly levels up, overcoming danger easily without leaving a sense of suspense or drama. The plot from episode 11 onwards, although it accelerates, falls into a boring loop: cultivation â breakthrough â meeting villains â winning. There are no knots, no twists that surprise viewers, everything just passes like a series of tasks in the game.
One of the most controversial points is the way to build the character of Han Lap. In many situations, Han Lap appears to be a kind, naïve, and caring person. But then soon after, he can become cold, scheming, and full of intrigue. These changes take place suddenly, without a reasonable psychological transformation process, causing the protagonist to be commented as "multi-personality".
The lack of landmark events or internal struggles makes Han Li's growth process disjointed. It is difficult for viewers to feel the depth of emotions, even more difficult to empathize with the characters' choices. Although it can be blamed on the limited duration, it is the lack of consistency in personality orientation that makes Han Li's image not leave a mark.
Not only the main character, but also the supporting cast of Mortal Tu Tien were also commented on as faint and lacking personality. From villains, fellow disciples to female characters, all seem to exist only to serve and highlight Han Li. They have no own journey, no specific goals, and almost do not leave an independent mark in the film circuit.
Especially the emotional line â an element that is often expected in fairy tale movies â is a big disappointment. The couple Han Lap â Nam Cung Uyen (Kim Than) lacked emotions, awkward interaction, and could not create a chemical reaction. Although there are many beauties around, from Mo Xiaohuan to other women, it all revolves around "liking Han Li", and no one has a clear reason to love or sacrifice for him. This makes the romantic relationship in the movie forced and boring.
It is undeniable that Mortal Tu Tien owns an eye-catching image with modern techniques and carefully invested costumes. But in the middle of a forest of fairy tales that are technically taken care of, just being beautiful is not enough. When audiences are used to epic sword fights, they need a captivating storyline and authentic emotions to keep them going.
Mortal Tu Tien can satisfy the viewer's eyes in the first few episodes, but the repetition in the storyline, the lack of depth in the characters, and the unconvincing psychological development have made the film gradually lose its original charm.
If placed next to the Hidden Sea Story â the opponent screened at the same time â the disadvantage of the Mortal Cultivator Fairy becomes even more obvious. Hidden Sea Story not only has a tight and layered storyline, but also owns a well-built cast of supporting characters, everyone has a role in the film. On the contrary, Mortal Tu Tien is like a separate stage for Han Lap, making the overall film poor and unbalanced.
Duong Duong: The shock of "re-export", the return of turbulence shocked Cbiz Thảo Vi17:19:50 06/08/2025Duong Duong's reappearance disappointed the audience when the work did not make a mark, received many criticisms and was considered a setback in the actor's career.
