Debuting on Netflix in early October, the romantic fantasy drama Genie , Make A Wish marks the long-awaited reunion of the couple Kim Woo Bin and Suzy, under the hands of director Ahn Gil Ho and "hit-maker" screenwriter Kim Eun Sook.
The plot begins when Ka Young accidentally frees the Genie, an entity that has been imprisoned for thousands of years, and becomes the owner of three wishes. However, instead of wishing, Ka Young challenges Genie, betting that not everyone will be corrupted by power. This experiment not only opened up a surreal world, but also raised questions about the limits of humanity and the cost of divine wishes.
Differences in Classic Motif
What sets Genie, Make A Wish apart is the way screenwriter Kim Eun Sook recounts the classic genie motif. Instead of focusing on predictable wishes, the film builds its core on a philosophical gamble between two opposing beings: Ka Young, who has closed his emotions because of the hurt from his family, and Genie, the arrogant god who believes that human nature is inherently weak and greedy.
The bet forced both of them to look at themselves. Genie gradually realizes that Ka Young's insensitivity is also a form of pain, and Ka Young begins to learn to sympathize and love. The relationship from confrontation gradually becomes the connection of souls who have lost faith. The film turns the three wishes into a profound metaphor for desire, morality, and the desire to be healed. This is a mythical story with a realistic tragic color, posing a difficult choice between breaking the seal of freedom or sacrificing for the other. This emotional transformation sometimes turns the work into a philosophical dialogue about human nature, beyond the framework of ordinary entertainment romance.
Bright Spots and Limitations
As soon as it aired, the film quickly reached the top trending in many countries, praised for the natural chemistry of the main couple and bold script ideas. The film maintains a balance between climactic elements (desert scenes, god-human boundaries) and heavy inner psychology. The script has depth, daring to exploit the dark side of people, where kindness and ambition always go hand in hand.
However, Genie, Make A Wish still has weaknesses. The film suffers from Kim Eun Sook's "eternal problem" is the embrace of many layers of meaning (philosophy of life, the law of cause and effect, healing), making the film circuit sometimes diluted, lacking the necessary climax. Some of the dialogue becomes dogmatic, losing its naturalness. Besides, the techniques in some scenes are still fake, lacking seamlessness with the real context, reducing the complete fantasy atmosphere.
Acting: Kim Woo Bin sublimated, Suzy Chong Cheng
Kim Woo Bin as Genie/Iblis continues to assert her ability to transform flexibly. He successfully portrays a god full of contradictions: both arrogant and careless, and gradually revealing his weakness when learning to vibrate. Woo Bin's psychological transformation from insensitivity to kindness is handled delicately and moderately, becoming a convincing bright spot.
On the contrary, Suzy as Ka Young shows a sluggish performance. Although she possesses an appearance suitable for a cold and distant type of character, when the script requires digging deep into the interior, especially the moments of facing real emotions, she still acts at a safe level. The way Suzy speaks the dialogue lacks emphasis makes the psychological scenes lose the necessary vibe, as a step backwards from the mature acting in Anna earlier. However, her efforts to choose a multi-layered, complex role like Ka Young are still remarkable.
