Without much promotion or media noise like many other historical blockbusters, "Peach Blossoms and the Moon" unexpectedly took the spotlight right from the first episodes.
Officially released on June 25 on the Tencent platform, the film quickly attracted attention thanks to its solid script, fast pace, and stable acting from the main couple Meng Ziyi - Liu Xueyi.
Although the theme of marriage and power is no longer new, "Peach Blossom and the River" has known how to renew itself thanks to its tight storytelling, meticulous character creation, and especially the emotionally invested opening, leading the audience into the story naturally.
The film revolves around the character Khuong Dao Hoa (played by Manh Tu Nghia) - Princess Bac Uyen, who lives an unfavored life, always having to be cautious in the dangerous harem. To protect her younger brother, she agrees to go to Dai Ky to marry. However, an incident occurs that makes her unable to marry the person designated as the fourth prince, but is forced to become the concubine of Tham Zai Da (Liu Hoc Nghia) - a powerful, cold and extremely resourceful general.
Their relationship begins with misunderstanding, suspicion and calculation - not rosy, not romanticized like many other ancient couples.
The biggest plus point of the film lies in the depth of the character development and the reasonable development journey. Khuong Dao Hoa is not the naive female lead, nor is she too strong in the usual "Mary Sue" style. She has lived in danger since childhood, so she knows how to be patient, hide herself and observe the opportunity. It is this quietness that makes this character attractive - strong but not stubborn, gentle but not weak.
Meanwhile, Tham Tai Da is a somewhat thorny male lead - intelligent, arrogan.t and always confident in his ability to control the situation. He used to loo.k dow.n o.n Khuong Dao Hoa, thinking that she was just a political "sacrificial object". But it was her calmness, wisdom and perseverance that gradually changed his perspective - from suspicion and confrontation to gradual trust and companionship. The feelings between them were built not hastily, not from the first glance but as a result of collisions, challenges and gradual maturity.
As for the actors, Meng Ziyi scored strongly thanks to his beautiful ancient costume, elegant royal aura, especially in the snow scene at the beginning of the film when Jiang Taohua stood still in the white sky, his eyes filled with sadness but full of resilience. This scene quickly became a ho.t topic on social networks with many compliments such as "beautiful as a painting", "the top visual of Meng Ziyi".
As for Liu Xue Yi, after a series of works that did not create a buzz, he seems to have found a role that "fits" him. The character Shen Zai Ye not only suits his appearance but also his cold, decisive temperament. Although he has not really exploded with emotion, the calmness, sharpness and majesty in his eyes and gestures have helped Liu Xue Yi leave a clearer impression than his previous roles.
However, the film also encountered some mino.r drawbacks. First, the "chemistry" between the main couple was not really convincing in the first few scenes. Some viewers commented that Meng Ziyi and Liu Xueyi still lacked chemistry, and their interactions did not feel as natural as expected. In addition, the dubbing in the opening episode was also criticized for being out of sync and not matching the lip movements, which somewhat affected the viewing experience - especially for viewers who are picky about post-production.
However, overall, "Peach Blossoms and the River" is still a historical drama worth watching this summer. With the combination of power struggles and emotional confrontations, along with a fast pace, logical plot and a cast of potential actors, the film is on the verge of becoming the unexpected "dark horse" of this year's historical drama genre.
If Meng Ziyi and Liu Xueyi continue to maintain their form and even break through in the next episodes, "Peach Blossoms and the Mountains" can completely help them regain the glory that has faded in recent years.
