Located about 30km south of Phnom Penh capital of Cambodia, Koh Rong island is known as a "western kingdom" when only women and children live, there is no sign of any man. any.
This island is 7ha wide and there are about 40 women and 107 children living in one village. Although there are no adult men, the women on this island live normally with their children.
In fact, this island is inhabited by widows, women and children abandoned by their husbands/fathers. There are also some women who are victims of sexual abuse, some husbands have died, some have been kidnapped many times.
All these women come from extremely difficult and poor circumstances. They have no decent place to live, only begging and scavenging on the streets helplessly.
Then an NGO in Phnom Penh proposed a plan to help these women and their children. Upon receiving the government's consent, all disadvantaged children and women were transferred to Koh Rong island to rebuild their lives.
Currently in Koh Rong, residents here are provided with conditions by the government to have houses to live in. After that, they rely on their own power to produce and pay for all their own living expenses.
The women on Koh Rong island can do agriculture, livestock, fishing, textiles or handicrafts by themselves without the help of a man. In case the work is too hard, the women here will pay to hire men from the island to work for them.
On this Koh Rong island, children live and grow up in a natural way, they are very innocent and pure. This place has no TV, phone... all information from outside is updated via radio.
Moreover, the women here also set up a clothing factory. These products are sold in many large Cambodian markets. Some other products and goods are also exported to foreign countries.
The women on Koh Rong island said that they do not forbid men from going on the island. But because they have been hurt by men in the past, perhaps these women are no longer interested in them.
Because of that, when they have to redo their lives, the women here have the mentality that they will live simply, without any man by their side. On the other hand, Cambodian men also feel guilty when they set foot on Koh Rong island.
Although they are not the ones who directly cause harm to the women here, they still feel guilty and have no intention of going to Koh Rong to respect the residents here. Everyday, the life of Koh Rong island residents is still going on peacefully. Women and children no longer have to worry about the past.
Here, they lead a healthy life, love and understand each other, share situations and create good friendships, and take care of their children growing up and maturing together. The pain of the past will probably also gradually fade away and look towards a brighter future.
But Koh Rong is still a paradise island, a most famous tourist destination of Cambodia. For those who are really looking for a peaceful, leisurely vacation, leaving all stress behind and away from the dust, Koh Rong is an extremely ideal proposition.
Dubbed "sea island paradise"
Most tourists coming to Cambodia only know famous tourist attractions such as ancient and mysterious Angkor Wat, but do not know that in this land of pagodas, there is an island as beautiful as Hawaii. Where else is Koh Rong. Koh Rong Island, Vietnamese transliteration as "Co Rong or Co Long", is a large island in Koh Kong province. It is located in the Gulf of Thailand and about 25 km from the coast of Sihanoukville and about 30 km south of the capital Phnom Penh.
Koh Rong is the second largest island in Cambodia with an area of more than 78 square kilometers, 43 kilometers of coastline and more than 23 beautiful beaches. It is famous for the pristine beauty of fine white sand, clear, warm sea water and a pleasant tropical climate. Huong is called by the most favorable name "sea and island paradise". Koh Rong is home to many unique marine species. Therefore, you cannot ignore the activity of diving to see the ocean with glasses and snorkeling (snorkelling) or scuba diving.
Snorkeling is a popular activity in Koh Rong. This island is still quite pristine, so the marine environment here has a very diverse and rich ecosystem. Under the clear blue water that can see the bottom, you will experience impressive scuba diving. Or join snorkeling or scuba diving to see schools of colorful fish swimming in the sea or colorful coral reefs swaying in the water.
At the Koh Rong Dive Center at Koh Touch, you will find many centers selling day diving tours. They will use boats to take you to the most beautiful seas, freely watching the miniature marine ecosystems. These are corals, seahorses, sea cucumbers and many colorful fishes. Usually these tours cost more than 10 USD (about 235,000 VND) and will start at 13:00 pm and end at 19 pm for you to fully experience activities such as scuba diving, fishing, seafood BBQ party, watching sunset and watch the plankton glow as it gets dark.
If Koh Rong is a woman's paradise, then in a faraway country of Japan, there is an island known as a man's paradise, women are not allowed to come close.
The land where women are forbidden
Okinoshima is an island located southwest of Japan, between the main island of Kyushu and the Korean peninsula. The island is part of the city of Takehara, Hiroshima Prefecture, Japan. Since ancient times, this place has been an important trading gateway, forming part of the sea trade route between neighboring countries of Japan. The island is also home to many cultural exchanges between the Japanese, the Chinese and the people of the Korean peninsula.
Okinoshima is a sacred land that flourished of the ancient Shinto faith (which is Japan's largest religion). It is home to an ancient natural monument, the Okitsu Shrine, part of the Munakata Taisha Okitsumiya shrine to the sea goddess, founded in the mid-17th century.
However, before the Okitsu temple was built on the island, sometime between the 4th and 9th centuries, spiritual rituals were performed by merchants. They bring precious gifts to the goddess of the sea Munakata Taisha Okitsumiya to pray for luck and peace for the long trip out in the ocean.
The island is sacred and has very strict regulations. The population on the island has only one monk, Mr. Takayuki Ashizu, who is in charge of governing and guarding the sacred temple on the island. Those who are allowed to move freely into Okitsu Shrine are only Shinto priests.
In addition, once a year, the island only welcomes a limited number of visitors, to attend a traditional festival lasting only two hours on May 27 to commemorate the sailors who died in a naval battle. during the Russo-Japanese War in 1904 - 1905. This year, the island only welcomed about 200 male people to participate in the ceremony.
Although the world is living in a modern and advanced 21st century, in Okinoshima the law of sexism still exists. No one knows exactly why women are forbidden to come to Okinoshima, only that this rule has existed since ancient times, rooted in Shinto religious beliefs. It is rumored that if a woman approaches Okitsu Shrine, part of the shrine complex of the goddess Munakata Taisha, she will be petrified.
"There are many laws and taboos on the island. Locals respect the sacredness of Okinoshima, because it is the 'dwelling place of the gods.' It's illegal for women to set foot on the island. It's been a long time coming and we have followed it. The locals living around the island and the monks all try to protect Okinoshima. We consider it an honor," said Takayuki Ashizu.
Many people believe that when women come to Okinoshima, it will make the sacred land dirty and unclean, affecting the practice of the monks as well as the sacredness of the island.
However, Mr. Takayuki Ashizu objected, "The law banning women has been upheld for many centuries. This law is completely unrelated to discrimination, sexism. Crossing the sea to the island is very dangerous. Because they are the reproductive sex, they are responsible for producing the next generation of humans and our law is to protect the weaker sex."
The local government said that although it only said it was forbidden to women, in fact the island banned almost everyone, except for monks who came here to practice. Male visitors are also subject to separate rules.
In particular, according to the regulations, male visitors when coming here are not allowed to bring back any items on the island, even if it is a branch of a tree or a blade of grass. They are also not allowed to disclose visit details. In addition, tetrapods are also prohibited. At the same time, anyone who wants to leave the island must also get permission from the monk to go.
