Tao Tsuchiya: Once afraid of cameras, after more than 15 years in the profession, he did not dare to accept actors

Tao Tsuchiya is a beautiful Japanese actress who has appeared in many major film projects. She has tried her hand at both voice acting and main acting. However, Tao Tsuchiya is still shy and does not dare to call herself an actress.

Recently, actress Tao Tsuchiya participated in dubbing the Japanese version of the animated film "Ballerina" (Vietnamese title: Fairy Dance; directors: Eric Summer, Eric Warin) which premiered in Japan on August 12. The film is set in France in the late 19th century, about a girl who dreams of becoming a ballet dancer, so she leaves her hometown and packs up for Paris, where she must compete with rivals at the Opera House to reach her dream stage.

In the film, Tsuchiya voices the dancing-loving young woman Felicie; Hitomi Kuroki plays Odette, a former ballerina who works as a janitor under the boss of Le Haut, and Mari Natsuki plays Le Haut. Today, we interview Tao Tsuchiya, who once said, "I sympathize with Felicie's situation," about the film and her acting career.

Although Tsuchiya has experience voicing in the long-running anime "Boku Dake ga Inai Machi", this is her first time trying her hand at a European and American animated film. Tao Tsuchiya shared her impression of the role of Felicie: "Felicie is a sensitive girl and has a very intense way of expressing emotions. This character can show a lot of expressions in the same scene, I thought it would be great if I could portray that". She further revealed: "The voice acting in foreign animations has a very special rhythm and atmosphere. The culture and Japanese language have a completely different way of expressing, so at first I was quite overwhelmed by this".

Tsuchiya smiled and shared more about the dubbing process: "I got used to it after dubbing a few scenes. Felicie's expressions also changed as the story progressed. At this point, I realized that I had to change my voice to match her mature appearance and her teenage emotions."

Felicie gives the impression of a passionate, courageous girl who always tries her best to achieve her dream. Tsuchiya shared: "I myself now really sympathize with this character." And she explained the reason: "The fierceness as well as the feeling of seeing people being eliminated one by one during the audition... I can understand that."

Tsuchiya also shared a lot about voice acting: "I always keep in mind that when acting, I have to be aware of everything from my blood vessels to every cell in order to be able to express the role with my whole body. However, I realized that thinking like that is too simple, because a movie also includes camera operations, atmosphere, hand movements..., if only facial expressions are not enough". She continued admiringly: "Voice actors must understand each subject clearly, see what they are talking to. In addition, they are also very enthusiastic about the work, even just by greeting on stage, they can say a lot".

She further revealed the difficulties in the recording process: "I really admire voice actors, it's really difficult to match the voice. Although dubbing is somewhat similar to acting, it's not just about getting the right intonation, but also breathing or starting at a certain point. Or you have to act so that the listener feels like the character is talking from afar, not standing from afar to record."

She concluded: "Because this job is so difficult, I think I might be pampering myself too much. I tried my best, so even though there are still many shortcomings, I still hope that this work will reach many audiences." In the movie "Ballerina", Odette asked Felicie while teaching ballet: "Why do you want to dance?". The reporter also asked Tsuchiya the same question: "Why do you want to act?". After affirming: "Because I am an actor", Tsuchiya smiled shyly: "Although it's still a bit embarrassing to affirm it now..."

Tsuchiya shyly said: "I wonder when I will be able to assert myself as a real actress. Right now I'm quite embarrassed because I think I haven't reached the level of an actress yet. However, when I received the Élan D'or film award, I felt that it would be a bit rude and seem like I was evading if I said, 'I'm not an actress yet.' So I decided to assert myself as an actress."

Recalling the time when she was in the public eye while filming the long-running drama "Hanako to Anne" (NHK), Tsuchiya shared: "The times on set were really fun. When I said, "Oh, I wish I could keep filming like this," Yuriko Yoshitaka laughed and said to me, "Huh, what are you talking about?" Although I still thought that acting was fun, when I participated in the movie "Mare", I realized my weakness. I wanted to act a lot but couldn't."

She has experienced many different situations and emotions: "The filming time of the morning drama "Mare" was quite difficult. I participated with the determination to "try not to catch a cold to maintain my physical strength, and smile brightly when tired". However, after participating, I realized that I became afraid of the camera, did not know how to change my expression every time I heard the command "Start", could not concentrate to distinguish between film and real life... But the result "Mare" became a drama that I really loved, I was very happy to have overcome the challenge of "Mare". For me, every work is a challenge."
