Vice President Kamala Harris called to congratulate Donald Trump on his victory. She later gave a speech admitting defeat to supporters at Howard University in Washington, D.C.
Harris said her heart was full of determination after losing to rival Donald Trump.
"Today, my heart is full of gratitude for the trust you have placed in me, full of love for the country and full of determination. The outcome of this election is not what we wanted, not what we fought for, not what we voted for. But... The light of America's promise will always burn brightly as long as we never give up. We have to accept the outcome of this election."
"While I admit to losing this election, I don't admit defeat in the fight that fueled this campaign," Harris said. It's a fight for freedom, for opportunity, for justice and dignity for all, a fight for the core ideals of our nation, ideals that reflect America at its best."
As for the young Americans watching, the vice president said: "It's normal to feel sad and disappointed. But know that everything will be fine."
Kamala Harris conceded defeat after Trump won in key swing states of Pennsylvania, Georgia, Wisconsin and Michigan.
The White House said that US President Joe Biden spoke with Harris by phone to congratulate her on her historic campaign. He also called the president-elect to congratulate and invite Donald Trump to the White House.
"President Biden is committed to ensuring a smooth transition and emphasizes the importance of working together to unite the country," the White House spokesperson said in a call on Nov. 6.
Biden also invited Trump to the White House and called Vice President Kamala Harris to praise her "historic campaign." The US president is scheduled to address the nation about the election results on November 7, the White House added.
Steven Cheung, a spokesman for Trump's campaign, said the president-elect appreciated Biden's call, adding that a meeting between the two sides would "take place soon." "Mr. Trump is looking forward to this meeting," Mr. Cheung said.
