On February 20th, the People's Committee of Tuyen Binh commune announced that as of noon that day, authorities had still not found one missing child in the boat capsizing incident on the Song Gianh River. Search and rescue efforts are being urgently carried out.
According to initial information from the commune authorities, the inland waterway traffic accident occurred at approximately 11:00 AM on February 19th, on the Gianh River section flowing through Tuyen Binh commune. The vessel involved was a self-made boat, piloted by Mr. Nguyen Van Tam (born in 1958, residing in Tan Hoa village, Tuyen Binh commune). Mr. Tam had borrowed this boat from another man in the area for his family's use.
At the time of the incident, there were seven people on the boat, all family members and residents of Tan Hoa village. Specifically, they included Mr. Nguyen Van Tam; Mrs. CTN (born in 1958); Ms. Nguyen Thi Bich Ha (born in 1990); and the children Nguyen Duy Khanh (born in 2014), Nguyen Tan Phat (born in 2016), Nguyen Diem Chinh (born in 2012), and NAN (born in 2023).
By the morning of February 20th, authorities confirmed that they had rescued three people: Ms. Nguyen Thi Bich Ha, Nguyen Duy Khanh, and Nguyen Tan Phat. These victims are currently under medical observation and care. Two people did not survive: Ms. CTN and child NAN. Child NAN died after being brought ashore for emergency treatment. By noon on February 20th, the body of Mr. Nguyen Van Tam, who had been missing earlier, was found. The search for Nguyen Diem Chinh is still being urgently conducted.
According to the People's Committee of Tuyen Binh commune, the initial cause was determined to be that the family was using a boat for Tet (Lunar New Year) celebrations. While traveling on the river, the boat unexpectedly sank. The specific cause of the incident is still under investigation by authorities, including factors related to the condition of the vessel, the number of people on board, and weather and current conditions at the time of the accident.
Immediately after receiving the report, the commune authorities promptly mobilized approximately 100 people to participate in the search and rescue operation. The force included the commune police, the commune military command, local security teams, militia, and a large number of local residents. The units coordinated and implemented various search plans along the accident site and downstream areas.
Local authorities are coordinating with provincial and regional defense forces to direct the search and investigation into the cause of the incident. Alongside the search efforts, local authorities have visited and offered condolences to the families of the victims, sharing their grief and providing timely emotional support. This heartbreaking event, occurring in the early days of the year, has cast a pall of anxiety and sorrow over Tan Hoa village.
According to previous reports, at around 11:30 AM on February 19th, Mr. Nguyen Van Tam's family was traveling by small boat on the river when an accident occurred. Local residents quickly discovered the incident and helped rescue five people. However, two of them did not survive, while Mr. Tam and a granddaughter were swept away by the current and are missing. This incident once again raises a warning about inland waterway safety, especially for homemade, uninspected vessels used by the public.
