Authorities in Khanh Hoa province have completed the scene investigation of the serious fire that occurred in an apartment on the 16th floor of building C, PH apartment complex (Nam Nha Trang ward), which resulted in two fatalities.
According to initial reports, at approximately 4 PM on the same day, many residents noticed black smoke emanating from an apartment on the 16th floor of building C. Just minutes later, the fire erupted fiercely, with thick black smoke billowing dozens of meters into the air, spreading to the balconies and corridors, engulfing a corner of the high-rise building.
Upon receiving the report, the Fire and Rescue Police force of Khanh Hoa province quickly dispatched vehicles and numerous officers and soldiers to the scene. Firefighting and rescue operations were carried out urgently. At the same time, the apartment building management coordinated with the authorities to evacuate residents using the stairwells to ensure safety.
According to observations at the scene, the thick smoke caused panic among many people. Some residents had to use wet towels to cover their noses and quickly moved to the lower floors following the instructions of the rescue team.
Ms. Thanh Hoa (28 years old), a resident of the PH apartment building, said that at the time of the incident, she was cleaning her house when she suddenly smelled a strong burning odor. "Just a few minutes later, smoke started seeping into the apartment through the cracks in the door. I ran outside to check and saw thick black smoke rising from the 16th floor. Right then, I shouted to alert everyone and we all moved downstairs," Ms. Hoa recounted, still visibly shaken.
A representative from the PH apartment building management board stated that before the fire was discovered, some neighbors heard arguing coming from the apartment and reported it to the management. When the team arrived to investigate, they found thick black smoke filling the hallway on the 16th floor.
Notably, the apartment door was locked from the inside at the time. The building management had to break down the door to access the scene and assist in extinguishing the fire, but faced many difficulties due to the intense blaze and thick smoke.
After the fire was brought under control, authorities conducted a scene investigation. Initial findings indicated the fire originated in the bedroom of the apartment. Inside the bathroom, rescuers discovered two deceased victims, one male and one female. The bodies were then removed from the scene and transported to the morgue at Khanh Hoa General Hospital for autopsy to determine the cause of death.
According to initial assessments, almost all the property in the apartment was burned or severely damaged by the heat and smoke. The walls were blackened with smoke, and many items were deformed. The hallway on the 16th floor was also affected by smoke and high temperatures.
PH Apartment Complex is a large-scale social housing project consisting of 3 buildings, each with 26 above-ground floors and 1 basement floor, housing thousands of residents. The fire, which occurred during the afternoon rush hour, has raised concerns about the risk of fire hazards in high-rise apartment buildings.
Authorities said the specific cause of the fire is under investigation. Police are gathering further statements from those involved and extracting security camera footage to aid in the investigation.
