Big names in Hollywood such as Netflix Chairman Reed Hastings, super agent Ari Emanuel, heiress Abigail Disney, screenwriter Damon Lindelof and author Stephen King have all called on Mr. Biden to abandon his re-election bid.
However, perhaps the most notable turn-around was from actor George Clooney, a major donor to the Democratic Party. Clooney just appeared at President Biden's fundraiser last month.
In an article published in the New York Times, the director of the movie Good Night, and Good Luck said he loves Mr. Biden and believes in his ethics, character and leadership ability.
However, Clooney wrote: "The Joe Biden I met 3 weeks ago at the fundraiser is not the Joe Biden of 2010, not the Joe Biden of 2020. He is the same person we all saw âat debate... We will not win in November with this president."
Clooney's article shows that Mr. Biden's current situation is not only a fierce political controversy but also a heartbreaking test of human love. Mr. Biden is loved by many members of the Democratic Party, but his declining health and ability make him the subject of ungrateful debates.
Clooney has close relationships with high-ranking figures and donors of the Democratic party. Therefore, his opinion carries more weight than that of any famous person. And Clooney isn't the only disgruntled sponsor.
Earlier this week, Mr. Biden called his sponsors and tried to reassure them, affirming that he had no intention of giving up the race and that he was still the best candidate to win. "My only job is to defeat Donald Trump," he said.
But this reassurance does not seem to reassure major donors. "Large donations have leveled off significantly since the debate," said one Democratic fundraiser.
Serious cracks in the traditional political establishment caused the US leader to face the highest pressure press conference in modern history on July 11.
Mr. Biden had to alone chair the press conference closing the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) summit at a time when more people in the US Congress and Hollywood called on him to abandon his election efforts because interests of the party and the country.
Initially, only a small group of Democratic lawmakers turned their backs on Mr. Biden, but this group is growing larger and larger.
Some Democratic lawmakers fear that the 81-year-old leader's determination to run for re-election could endanger the democracy he says he is trying to save.
Ms. Pelosi, who still has an important voice in the party, recently appeared on MSNBC's "Morning Joe" program, saying that whether Mr. Biden "continues to run or not is up to him to decide." This statement is understood as a request for Mr. Biden to change his mind.
After Ms. Pelosi's statement, many other lawmakers such as Ritchie Torres also expressed similar views.
"If we're going to be on a political suicide mission, we should at least be honest about it," Democratic Rep. Ritchie Torres told CNN.
Democratic Congressman Pat Ryan called on Mr. Biden to keep his promise to act as a bridge to the new generation of leaders.
"Mr. Trump is an existential threat to American democracy. Our mission is to present the strongest candidate to defeat him. Mr. Biden is a patriot, but no longer the best candidate to defeat Mr. Trump," Mr. Ryan said.
"Everything is frozen because no one knows what's going to happen. Everyone is waiting to see," a Democratic strategist told CNN. This person added that donors stopped transferring money and were waiting for the results of Mr. Biden's press conference on July 11.
Rep. Elissa Slotkin, who is locked in a tight Senate race in Michigan, said President Biden is ahead in her state's caucuses by rival Donald Trump, the New York Times reported. .
If the president cannot win Michigan like he did in 2020, the path to achieving the 270 electoral votes needed to remain in the White House will be very narrow.
