Having been given a fatal prognosis and left in a vegetative state after a tragic drowning incident, TQM's (Thai Nguyen) three-month journey to "rediscover herself" is not only a real-life fairy tale but also a groundbreaking milestone in Vietnamese medicine.
A tragic 20-minute ordeal.
In October 2025, a horrific accident struck the family of TQM in Thai Nguyen. The child was found in a pond in a state of cardiac and respiratory arrest after about 20 minutes of drowning. Despite continuous first aid and transfer to another hospital, hope seemed to fade when, at the National Children's Hospital, doctors predicted death and advised the family to take the child home after removing the ventilator.
However, TQM's strong survival instinct helped him persevere. Although he survived, the boy fell into a vegetative state: quadriplegia, complete loss of gross motor skills, emotionless, and unable to cry. All doors seemed to slam shut in front of his family.
The "Hyperbaric Oxygen Train" and the 90-Day Recovery Journey
On November 18, 2025, TQM was brought to Hong Ngoc General Hospital in a state of complete immobility. There, Dr. Dinh Van Hao and his team decided to apply a special treatment protocol: hyperbaric oxygen therapy combined with physiotherapy.
The race against time began. Each milestone in the baby's recovery brought overwhelming joy to the medical team and family:
After 10 days: The child began to react to sounds. After 14 days (4 hyperbaric oxygen sessions): The boy, who was previously quadriplegic, could lift his head and torso independently. Early January 2026: TQM could sit steadily, call out to family members, and express his personal needs. After 2 months: The child communicated well, spoke long sentences, and had flexible visual navigation. Late February 2026: Exactly 3 months into treatment, the "miracle" officially occurred when the child could walk independently and recovered almost completely his cognitive abilities compared to before the accident.
When medicine writes miracles
The success of this case was not simply due to luck. According to Dr. Dinh Van Hao, the key lay in taking advantage of the "golden period" (3-6 months after the incident) and the precise dosage of oxygen.
Providing pediatric patients with 100% pure oxygen in a high-pressure environment (3 PSI) helped stimulate nerve cells to "awaken," creating new connections to replace brain tissue damaged by oxygen deprivation. This is a significant challenge, as the world's medical literature has only recorded about three similar successful cases, and treatment protocols are primarily for adults.
Opening a new door of hope.
The story of baby TQM is not only a source of happiness for a family in Thai Nguyen, but also a significant step forward for the country's healthcare system. This success proves that: Being in a vegetative state or suffering from cerebral palsy due to oxygen deprivation is no longer a permanent "death sentence".
With specialized hyperbaric oxygen therapy, doctors are opening up opportunities for thousands of other patients to return to normal lives, turning what seemed impossible into reality.
The miraculous recovery of little TQM is a testament to the indomitable spirit of humanity and a new chapter of hope that Vietnamese medicine has just written for lives that seemed to have ended. Although the road ahead is still long, the smile and independent steps of this 3-year-old boy today prove that: as long as you don't give up, miracles will always sprout from perseverance and the remarkable advances of medicine.
