In the past few days, Indian social media has been abuzz with the case of a flight attendant working for Air India Express who was arrested at Kannur airport for allegedly smuggling gold and hiding it in her rectum.
In the past few days, India has been abuzz with the news that a female flight attendant of this country was arrested at the airport on suspicion of smuggling. According to the Directorate General of Monetary Intelligence of India (DRI), the functional forces found this person hiding 960g of mixed gold in the rectum. Although the smuggling of gold by air is not uncommon in India, this is the first time that the suspect, a crew member, has been found hiding this item in his body.
The arrest was made based on specific intelligence from the Directorate General of Indian Monetary Intelligence (DRI). It is known that the staff of the directorate stopped the flight attendant when she had just landed at Kannur International Airport (India) on May 28 departing from Muscat when she received information that she was smuggling gold in mixed form.
Authorities said flight attendant Surabhi Khatun was specially trained to smuggle a kilogram of gold by hiding it in her rectum. The intelligence agency came to this conclusion because an untrained person could not hide so much gold in his body. There was nothing unusual in Surabhi's gait or behavior.
After the search, 960 grams of smuggled gold in mixed form were recovered from the hostess's rectum. She was then detained for 14 days in a women's prison in Kannur.
Earlier, India's Directorate of Monetary Intelligence (DRI) received reports that some smuggling groups trained women to hide gold in their rectals. The body will try to get rid of the foreign object, so these people are specially trained to control this for hours.
Indian media reported that the female suspect in the incident, Surbhi Khatun, 26, from Kolkata, was a flight attendant on an Air India flight. She is famous for her beauty and often shares pictures of her luxurious life on social media. TV9 Hindi quoted a source from the authorities as saying that Khatun had smuggled gold many times in the past, also using the same trick. If she passes, she will receive a certain amount of wages.
Currently, Khatun has been transferred to a women-only prison, where he is detained for 14 days. It is likely that after this period ends, a new detention order for Khatun will be issued.
Police are still expanding their investigation to identify more suspects involved. A source from DRI recently said that an important link of the gold smuggling ring related to Khatun has been caught. The man, named Suhail, is believed to be the mastermind behind the incident. This person has carried out more than 20 cases of gold smuggling through flight attendants. Authorities are continuing to exploit testimony from Suhail.
In 2020, a man was arrested at Kannur Airport in the Indian state of Kerala earlier this week after airport officials found more than 972 grams of flat gold hidden in the passenger's rectum, Fox News reported.
Officials from the airport's Aviation Intelligence Unit (AIU) removed the gold from the man's rectum.
The man hid gold in his rectum traveling from Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE) to Kerala on a GoAir flight, The National reported.
At the time of 2020, according to news outlets, India imposed an 18% tax on gold. The New York Post, said that the 972 grams of gold that passengers tried to bring into India were worth about $60,000.
However, the nearly 1kg of gold mentioned above is not the only smuggled gold on the flight from Dubai to Kerala. AIU officials also found 1,470 grams of gold in another passenger. Officials did not explain where the smuggled gold was hidden.
