The incident of a woman who died and still "poisoned" dozens of doctors and nurses is likened to a plot from a science fiction movie, because it is so unbelievable that it is scary. Experts are also stumped by this case.
Gloria Ramirez is an ordinary woman living in Riverside, California (USA) with two children and a husband. She is praised for being friendly, easy-going and often brings joy to others. Gloria Ramirez would probably have lived a quiet life that few people know about if a historic event in the medical field had not happened and turned it into an unsolvable mystery. From then on, she was widely known by the name "Toxic Lady".
It all began on February 19, 1994, when Gloria Ramirez, 31, was admitted to Riverside General Hospital with terminal cervical cancer. Upon arrival, Gloria was conscious but her breathing was shallow, her heart was racing, and her bloo.d pressure was dropping.
Doctors and nurses rushed to her aid, administering various life-saving injections to try to revive her. However, nothing worked. Seeing that Gloria's condition was getting worse, the doctors decided to use electric shoc.k to stimulate her slowing heart rate.

As the nurses removed the womanâs shirt to perform the defibrillation, strange and mysterious phenomena began to occur. First, the patientâs ski.n became shiny, as if covered in a glistening liquid, and her breath smelled of garlic. The medical staff also smelled a fruity odor coming from her mouth.
Seeing something unusual, the doctor decided to draw bloo.d from Gloria Ramirez for testing, a task assigned to nurse Susan Kane. As the syringe filled with the patient's bloo.d, the room began to smell of a strange chemical, like ammonia. A doctor named Julie Gorchynski, saw small, manila-colored particles floating in the bloo.d tube.
Suddenly, Julie and Susan both fainted, and the doctor named Maureen who was present at the time also lost control and passed out. Immediately, the hospital management isolated the patient room and evacuated all medical staff. They mobilized the best doctors to treat Gloria. But at 8:45 am, the woman passed away due to severe kidney failure.
Immediately after Gloria Ramirez died, the entire hospital underwent an emergency air purification test to prevent the release of any dangerous substances. To handle Gloriaâs body, a special team was brought in in hazmat suits. They searched for signs of toxic gases, poisons, or other foreign substances. But nothing was found that could have caused the medical staff to faint.
The investigation yielded no results, and the team was forced to put the womanâs body in a sealed aluminum coffin. The autops.y did not take place until nearly a week later, but the mysteries continued. Twenty-three of the 37 medical staff on duty that night began to experience strange symptoms and fainted, and five were hospitalized for treatment.
One staff member had difficulty breathing for 10 days in the hospital. A doctor, the worst affected, spent two weeks in intensive care. In addition to difficulty breathing, the doctor suffered from hepatitis, pancreatitis and avascular necrosi.s, a lack of bloo.d flo.w to the bone tissue. The avascular necrosi.s affected her knee, leaving her on crutches for months.
The press began to call Gloria Ramirez "Miss Toxic" because no one could get close to her without experiencing a host of medical problems. However, no one could pinpoint the exact cause of her deat.h immediately after her deat.h. Officials got involved and conducted three autopsies.
The first occurred six days after Gloria Ramirez died, the second six weeks later, and the third just before her burial. During the second autops.y on March 25, 1994, more than a month after Gloria died, the team concluded that there were traces of Tylenol, lidocaine, codeine, and Tigan in her system. Tigan is an anti-nausea medication, and it breaks down into amines in the body. Amines are related to ammonia, which could explain the ammonia smell in the womanâs bloo.d sample at the hospital.
More importantly, the toxicology report said that Gloria Ramirez had large amounts of dimethyl sulfone in her bloo.d and tissues. Dimethyl sulfone occurs naturally in the human body when it breaks down certain substancesâwhich may have been what caused the fluid that surrounded the womanâs body during the emergency room visit.
On April 12, 1994, county officials announced that Gloria Ramirez had died of heart failure due to kidney failure related to late-stage cervical cancer. Although her body had abnormalities, there was not enough evidence to explain her deat.h.
Another theory is that the patient may have used a popular home remedy called DMSO to relieve cancer symptoms. It may have combined with oxygen in the emergency oxygen mask and formed Dimethyl sulfone. Investigators expose.d DMSO to oxygen to see if this was possible, and large amounts of manila-colored Dimethyl sulfone crystals were created in the process.
Dimethyl sulfone is not toxic. However, it can start a chain reaction that results in a large amount of toxic fumes. When one oxygen molecule combines with DMSO, humans get dimethyl sulfone. But when two oxygen molecules combine with dimethyl sulfone, what they get is dimethyl sulfate, which causes convulsions, delirium, paralysis, coma, and slow organ damage.

So Grant believes the paramedics weren't suffering from mass hysteria, they were suffering from dimethyl sulfate poisonin.g. And it was the cream that gave Gloria Ramirez's mouth a sweet smell. This is considered the most likely explanation for the woman's strange deat.h.
But how Dimethyl sulfoxide could affect so many others in such a mysterious way, no one has been able to explain. More importantly, Gloria Ramirez's family denied that she used DMSO. The woman was buried in Olivewood Memorial Park. To this day, the mysterious phenomena surrounding her deat.h still baffles scientists. The case is also included in one of the legendary medical mysteries: the Toxic Lady of Riverside, USA.
