Recently, many social networking forums have been sharing a clip recording the scene where a male employee at a coffee shop, while cleaning tables, threw plastic cups of water onto the beach in front of many other customers.
According to the person who posted the video, the clip was recorded at a coffee shop with a direct view of the sea in Mui Ne (Phan Thiet city, Binh Thuan province).
According to this customer, the incident happened on the evening of October 13. At first, the customer thought that the place was a garbage dump, so the male employee cleaned it up quickly and then collected it for later disposal. In the clip, the restaurant employee approached the table where the customers had just finished drinking and asked the customers sitting at the next table: "Everyone has left here, right?". Immediately after, this employee threw the drinking glasses, including spoons, straws and leftover water into the sea, right in front of the customers sitting there.
This action of the male employee made many people extremely angry. Netizens condemned and said that they would boycott this coffee shop. One person wondered: "Oh my god, a self-destruction?". Another added: "I was thinking of leaving. This shop is boring. Just take a break, no more dating friends, check-in, or virtual life."
Another account was upset and commented: "I was walking on the street and saw someone throwing a bag of water on the sidewalk and I felt uncomfortable, even though there might be people cleaning up after them. But this is not just one cup but many cups, and it's also the ocean environment. The shop should review its environmental protection awareness." Another group of netizens were skeptical, thinking that the waiter who caused the trouble was "deliberately trying to play dirty" on this newly opened coffee shop.
Others suggested some ways to handle the media crisis the coffee shop is facing, as well as hoping that the business will have a peaceful ending after the scandal.
After the incident became a big hit on social media, the Jeju Coffee Phan Thiet fanpage posted an apology for poor management and employee supervision. According to the shop representative, the male employee who did the above action was a seasonal employee, because the shop was crowded, they hired more staff on weekends, currently this person has quit and the shop cannot be contacted.
Regarding this incident, on October 15, speaking with reporters, Mr. Bui Ngoc Lam, Chairman of the People's Committee of Mui Ne Ward (Phan Thiet City), said that the ward will invite the restaurant owner to work, and will punish the act of littering (if any) according to the provisions of the law.
After the investigation, if the restaurant commits any violations, the ward will decide to impose a penalty. "The ward must impose a resolute penalty to set an example for others," affirmed the Chairman of the People's Committee of Mui Ne ward.
This disgusting act of destroying the environment immediately made many people angry when it was posted. Not only did they condemn the staff, many people even criticized the restaurant for not having a training process or regulations on waste treatment, causing serious environmental damage.
Most recently, this coffee shop announced its permanent closure even though it only officially welcomed customers on October 6. On the Jeju coffee Phan Thiet fanpage, it is written:
"We were wrong... we're really sorry everyone, even though it was only a short time, we still received a lot of support from everyone!! Thank you everyone for everything!!"
Previously, the shop had apologized and proposed specific solutions such as closing for a day to clean up the entire beach on both sides and promising to never let this incident happen again. On the afternoon of October 15, Mr. Bui Ngoc Lam, Chairman of the People's Committee of Mui Ne Ward, Phan Thiet City, Binh Thuan Province, signed a decision to impose an administrative fine of VND 1,500,000 on Mr. NVN (36 years old, residing in Quarter 14, Phu Thuy Ward, Phan Thiet City) - the owner of the coffee shop, for dumping plastic waste generated from daily activities into the sea in Quarter 10, Mui Ne Ward, Phan Thiet City.
At the meeting with the authorities, Mr. N. clearly realized that littering is against the rules and affects the surrounding environment. Currently, the coffee shop has also hired people to clean up, collect trash, and restore the area to its original state, as well as committed to not dumping trash into the marine environment.
