Pickleball was invented by US congressman Joel Pritchard in 1965. It was one weekend, after playing golf with his friend Bill Bell, he came home to find his whole family sitting together but with nothing to do.

In the years that followed, pickleball was incorporated into major senior sporting events. In 2005, a new association was formed called the American Pickleball Association. They built the first website dedicated to the new sport, which continues to attract players today.

In 2009, the first national pickleball tournament for players of all ages was held in Buckeye, Arizona. The tournament attracted nearly 400 players from 26 U.S. states and several Canadian provinces.
