Hanoi coffee shop arson case: 11 people identified, Secretary requests early trial

Regarding the arson at 258 Pham Van Dong Street, the Secretary of the Hanoi Party Committee affirmed that this was an especially serious murder case, causing outrage in public opinion.

On the afternoon of December 19, Secretary of the Hanoi Party Committee - Bui Thi Minh Hoai chaired a meeting of the Standing Committee of the City Party Committee to listen to the report and direct the handling of the fire that occurred at the coffee shop at 258 Pham Van Dong Street.

Reporting at the meeting, Permanent Vice Chairman of Hanoi People's Committee Le Hong Son said that at 11:03 p.m. on December 18, the Command Information Center - Hanoi City Police received a report of a fire at a coffee shop (Pham Van Dong Street, Co Nhue 2 Ward, Bac Tu Liem District).

It is known that the house where the fire occurred is a 4-storey coffee shop with a reinforced concrete structure, the first floor is a coffee shop with a construction area of about 40m2. Immediately after receiving the news, the Fire Prevention, Fire Fighting and Rescue Police (Hanoi City Police) focused on deploying forces and vehicles to approach the scene, deploying fire fighting and rescue.

At around 11:38 p.m. the same day, the fire was basically under control, preventing it from spreading. At 0:30 a.m. the next day, the fire was completely extinguished, and authorities rescued 5 people (1 person was safe, 4 people received first aid and emergency care at E Hospital). The consequences left 11 people dead, and property damage is being counted.

The city has directed the city police to urgently investigate and clarify the cause of the fire, clarify the responsibilities of related organizations and individuals; and strictly handle the case according to the provisions of the law. On December 19, Hanoi police issued a decision to initiate criminal proceedings and prosecute Cao Van Hung (born in 1973, residing in Dai Mach commune, Dong Anh district) to investigate and handle the act of burning down a coffee shop that caused many deaths in Bac Tu Liem district.

After listening to reports from departments and branches, opinions exchanged, discussed, and concluding the meeting, Secretary of the Hanoi Party Committee Bui Thi Minh Hoai affirmed that the arson incident at 258 Pham Van Dong Street was "an especially serious murder case, causing outrage in public opinion". The incident received special attention from the Central leadership, who gave leadership opinions and directed the handling of the incident.

Regarding the upcoming tasks, the Secretary of the Hanoi Party Committee requested the Party Committee of the City People's Committee to direct and mobilize the best doctors and medical staff to focus on caring for and treating the victims; at the same time, continue to support the families of the deceased, both helping to stabilize their psychology and sharing and helping with the funeral.

The Secretary of the Hanoi Party Committee requested the city's judicial agencies to promptly conclude the investigation, complete the case file, and bring the case to trial as soon as possible, condemning the brutal crimes that caused this particularly serious case; the investigation process must carefully consider issues to prevent related consequences.

Information from Hospital 198 - Ministry of Public Security said that the identities of all 11 victims who died in the fire at the coffee shop on Pham Van Dong Street have been determined, including:
