The woman said that on the morning of February 24, Ms. Nguyen Ngoc PL (45 years old, neighbor) told her that her son, Duong Quoc Trung (21 years old), bought a bottle of gasoline and left it in front of the house. Afraid that her son would do something stupid, Ms. L. took the bottle of gasoline and left.

Unexpectedly, in the afternoon, Trung bought another bottle of gasoline, holding gasoline in one hand and a lighter in the other, walking in the middle of the street, scaring everyone. "At that time, Mrs. L. asked, "What are you buying gasoline for?" Trung replied, "You will know soon." Everyone was afraid that he would do something stupid, so my husband and the family's servants carried two fire extinguishers behind him.

No one expected him to pour gasoline on Mrs. L. and then set her mother on fire. Even though they were prepared, everyone was scared and frantic, trying to put out the fire. No one dared to rush in to control Trung for fear that they would also be poured gasoline and set on fire like Mrs. L," said Ms. Tho.

The woman said that she and her husband witnessed the whole time Trung poured gasoline and burned Mrs. L. on the afternoon of February 24. "It was so scary, he burned his mother, used bricks, rocks, flower pots, and sticks to attack her terribly. When my husband and the maid came to rescue her and took Mrs. L. to hide in my house, Trung took a bottle of gasoline and a lighter and chased her into my bedroom.

I hugged my child and ran into the room to close the door, but he stood outside and banged loudly on the door. I was so frozen that I couldn't even hold the phone to call the police," Ms. Tho recounted in horror.

The female neighbor added that after being burned, Ms. L. suffered severe burns and multiple head injuries from being beaten with bricks and sticks by Trung. Ms. L. lost the feeling of pain and her clothes were completely burned. Ms. Tho gave Ms. L. her clothes to wear before Ms. L. was taken to the emergency room.

As one of the two men holding the fire extinguisher to save Mrs. L. and stop Trung, Nguyen Duy Khang (23 years old) is still haunted. He said that at that time he was very calm, choosing to save Mrs. L. first, then control the subject.

"It was terrifying and unimaginable. At that time, he seemed to have gone crazy, unable to approach or control. We only thought of finding a way to save Mrs. L. first, and wait until there were enough people to deal with Trung later. I called Mrs. L. to run into the house, then stood at the door holding a fire extinguisher and spraying it in Trung's face to stop him.

He chased me into the motorbike parking lot, still holding the gasoline bottle and lighter. If he had been more agitated, the consequences would have been unpredictable. A while later, after calling 7 men, we were able to control the subject. He struggled, beat and threatened to kill everyone," Khang said.

Living not far from Mrs. L's house, Mrs. Duong Ngoc Han (45 years old) said that she used to help take care of her youngest daughter who was in kindergarten so that Mrs. L could go sell lottery tickets.

Mrs. L's family has 3 children. The eldest daughter just got a job at a bakery near home, the youngest is in kindergarten, Trung is a diligent worker, helping his mother make a living every day and taking care of his younger brother's education. According to Mrs. Han, a few years ago, Mrs. L's husband lost money in business, became depressed and passed away. Mrs. L had to sell lottery tickets and work at a noodle shop to support her children.

But after Tet, Trung showed unusual behavior, often walking on the streets in the neighborhood with a gloomy face and the heartbreaking incident happened on the afternoon of February 24. No one really expected a gentle, hard-working young man to do such a thing. "After the incident, Trung was arrested by the police. Ms. L was taken to the emergency room by the people, the eldest daughter took care of her mother, and the youngest daughter was picked up by relatives," Ms. Han added.
