According to preliminary information, the fire originated in a house on the edge of the river, spreading to other homes. Seeing the whole block of houses destroyed by the flames, many residents could not help but be shocked.
By nearly 23:00 on the same day, authorities had begun sending residents back to their homes to check on property. However, many residents living in Alley 124 could not return home at night and had to find a place to live.
Nguyen Thi Nghia, a resident who lives near the burning houses, said that when she ran outside, she found that the fire had broken out violently, enveloping the alley. She only managed to gather the necessary items and some possessions and escaped outside.
Nghia wishes to return to her home to check and sleep for the night, but the surrounding fire scene is still cordoned off. So, she brought her young children and some belongings to find a place to sleep overnight.
Nguyen Thi Huong also said that seeing the fire burning fiercely, she could only collect valuables and run outside. At about 12 p.m., Ms. Huong and her relatives took a motorbike and ran to their acquaintances to help. Besides, some residents moved to the neighborhood headquarters to rest, take a nap overnight.
By April 2, the functional forces of District 8 (Ho Chi Minh City) HCMC) is still coordinating with relevant units to examine the scene and investigate the cause of many houses along the canal being burned. The initial cause was determined to be a fire that broke out from an old wood material dump.
The People's Committee of District 8 (HCMC) sent a report to the HCMC Department of Information and Communications to hold a press conference on the house fire at alley 124 Pham The Hien Street (in Ward 2). The meeting was chaired by Vice Chairman of District 8 People's Committee - Pham Quang Tu at 15:30 pm on the same day.
The content of the press conference will provide information, the development of the incident and firefighting, rescue and rescue work; support and care for affected households. Standing in the distance looking into an alley with a row of canalside houses burned down, Mr. Tam (50, of District 4), who works as a sander for a furniture factory here, said he had worked here for many years and the area had never had a fire.
"Making furniture, it is still important to prevent fire, because dry wood materials, sawdust are very flammable. In this area, the authorities regularly check fire protection, each house is equipped with mini fire extinguishers, warning signs prohibiting smoking,...," he said.
Talking to Tuoi Tre Online about this issue, Mr. Tang Xuan Phong, Chairman of the People's Committee of Ward 2, District 8 (HCMC).
