Ali Ay and Rukiye Ay are a married couple of 5 years in Konya city, central Türkiye. On January 9, Rukiye wanted to surprise her husband, so she made breakfast and brought it to the bed to wake him up for a meal. But unexpectedly, the 23-year-old woman was scolded by her husband like a slap in the face for "crime" of waking him up.

Then Ali suddenly poured boiling water straight down Rukiye's neck in great pain. The poor wife said he was going to splash water on her face, but she turned around to dodge.

The police arrived and handled the incident. When taken to the hospital, the young mother's back was red and severely peeling. The husband was initially arrested but was later allowed to be released on bail by the Turkish authorities, causing a wave of anger in the country. Due to the public backlash, plus a complaint from Rukiye's lawyer, Ali was re-arrested and remanded in custody on the orders of the Chief Prosecutor's Office.
