Of the 181 people on board the Jeju Air plane in the Korean air disaster, only two flight attendants miraculously survived. Among the passengers was a 3-year-old bo.y.
At around 9:07 a.m. on December 29, flight number 7C2216 of Jeju Air (South Korea) suddenly encountered a terrible tragedy while carrying 181 people. After catching fire and breaking apart after hitting the barrier, the plane exploded, leaving only the tail section of the plane.
On the evening of December 29, 179 unfortunate people were found and no more miracles happened. The only miracle happened to 2 flight attendants of the airline, Mr. Lee (33 years old) and Ms. Koo (28 years old). Both were rescued from the tail of the plane immediately after the collision and taken to the hospital. Although both were seriously injured, the 2 lucky people were not in a life-threatening condition.
The two flight attendants are said to have been lucky to survive because they were in an area of the plane called the "galley" - also known as the kitchen - located at the rear of the plane, behind the last row of seats. This is where flight attendants who serve in the rear of the plane sit. Although this area is generally considered to have a low survival rate in the event of an air crash, in this case, the separation of the tail of the plane from the rest of the plane after it hi.t the airport wall may have increased their chances of survival. In addition, the special seat belts for flight attendants, which are designed to hold the body more securely than regular seat belts, are also considered a factor in minimizing injuries.
Lee Mo was one of two lucky people to be saved from the horrific collision that killed almost everyone on board a Jeju Air flight on December 29. At the time of the plane crash, Lee Mo was a flight attendant serving passengers at the back of the cabin. According to the director of Ju Woong Hospital, Lee Mo told the doctor at the hospital: "When I woke up, I was saved." However, Mr. Ju Woong did not ask about the details of the collision because he believed it would not help the patient's recovery process. Currently, Lee Mo is being treated in the intensive care unit and has been diagnosed with multiple fractures. "He is completely able to communicate. Currently, there are no signs that he has memory loss," Mr. Ju Woong said.
Meanwhile, the remaining survivor, a 25-year-old flight attendant surnamed Koo, is being treated at the Asan Medical Center in eastern Seoul. Koo is reportedly in stable condition, despite injuries to her ankle and head. As of now, all 179 people on board have been found, except for two crew members who were rescued from the crash. According to the management headquarters at the scene, authorities are expected to continue collecting the belongings of the unfortunate passengers at the scene on December 30.
So far, the identities of 88 people have been confirmed through fingerprints. The identities of the remaining passengers can only be confirmed by comparing them with the DNA of relatives. According to authorities, the youngest passenger was a 3-year-old bo.y and the oldest was a 78-year-old man. In addition, the list of the ill-fated passengers also included 5 children under the ag.e of 10.
Jeju Air flight 7C2216 departed from Bangkok, Thailand at 1:30 a.m. on December 29 and was scheduled to land at Muan Airport at 8:30 a.m. on the same day. However, the collision occurred as the plane approached Runway 1 of Muan Airport. According to an official at the scene, the plane attempted to land but was unable to slow down. During the first landing, the plane was unable to land normally, so it turned around once and collided during the second landing attempt.
South Korean authorities said a bird strike may have caused the landing gear to malfunction in the plane crash. Most of the passengers were South Korean, except for two Thai nationals.
