A Jeju Air plane carrying 181 people crashed at Muan International Airport in South Korea. The plane skidded off the runway, crashed into a fence and burst into flames. The deat.h toll has risen to at least 85 and is expected to rise.
At 9:07 a.m. local time, a serious incident occurred at Muan International Airport, 288 kilometers southwest of Seoul. Jeju Air Flight 7C 2216, which departed from Bangkok, Thailand at 1:30 a.m. local time, encountered an incident during landing. The plane was scheduled to land at 8:30 a.m. but had to make a failed landing and continue to circle before the serious incident occurred.
Flight 7C 2216 had a total of 181 people on board, including 175 passengers and 6 crew members. During the landing, the plane experienced a problem with the landing gear, which prevented the pilot from landing as planned. After the first unsuccessful landing attempt, the plane had to circle around and attempt to land again. However, during the second landing, the plane skidded off the runway and crashed into a guardrail and nearby structures, causing a large fire.
Immediately after the incident, Acting President Choi Sang-mok ordered the mobilization of all resources for rescue work and was present at the scene. Rescue forces had to work urgently to extinguish the fire, and after about 40 minutes, the fire was completely controlled. However, the rescue work continues, as rescue forces and search teams are working hard to find and bring the remaining passengers out safely. After successfully handling the plane, Korean authorities have begun to calculate the damage.
South Korean authorities are investigating the cause of the incident, and according to initial information, one hypothesis is that a collision with a bird during the flight may have caused a serious problem with the landing gear. Some passengers sent messages saying that a bird may have gotten stuck in the plane's wing, causing the landing gear to not function properly. However, this is only an initial hypothesis and authorities are still investigating to clarify the exact cause.
Based on preliminary information, the majority of the passengers were South Korean, with a small number of passengers from Thailand. Rescuers have confirmed that at least two people have been rescued, but their conditions are being closely monitored. Authorities continue to update the status of other passengers, and the number of people involved in the acciden.t is still being confirmed.
According to the Guardian, Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra sent her condolences to the families of the dead and injured on the social media platform X. In the post, Ms. Shinawatra said she had asked the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to investigate whether there were any Thai passengers on this flight and update the current situation.
Jeju Air, one of South Korea's most popular airlines, has a history of safe and reliable operations. However, this incident has raised many questions about maintenance procedures and flight safety. According to Reuters, Jeju Air has apologized for causing concern over the tragic incident on the morning of December 29. The airline also pledged to do its best to resolve the incident.
The incident at Muan Airport was a major disaster, and rescue efforts are still underway. Currently, the authorities are working hard to investigate the cause and complete relevant legal procedures. The investigation is still ongoing, and determining the exact cause of the incident will be an important factor in preventing similar unfortunate incidents from happening in the future.
