The phone while charging exploded, causing a 37-year-old woman (Bac Giang) to rupture her eyeball, amputate the fingers of her right hand, a piece of plastic pierced her neck trachea and countless wounds throughout her body.
On August 9, Dr. Nguyen Trong Trong, Department of General Trauma Surgery, Viet Duc Hospital, said that the department had just received a case of multiple dangerous injuries caused by a phone exploding while charging.
The 37-year-old woman was transferred to Viet Duc Hospital in the morning of August 6 with life-threatening injuries. The patient was transferred from North Thang Long Hospital (Hanoi) on the morning of 6-8, after receiving first aid.
At the time of reception, there are numerous injuries that cause the patient's jaw and face area to deform, rupture of the eyeball. A 1cm piece of plastic pierced the trachea of the neck, not to mention many soft wounds in the chest, abdomen, hands, legs ...
In particular, the patient's right hand (holding the phone) was severely damaged, 5 fingers were completely crushed and the skin was close to the bone.
Doctors at the hospital worked with the general orthopedic trauma surgeon to suture the trachea and facial wounds, pick up each foreign object at the major wounds, and clean the remaining wounds for the patient. With damage to the patient's eye, Viet Duc Hospital invited a team of doctors from the National Eye Hospital directly to operate, scooping the right eyeball was broken, the patient permanently lost the vision of his right eye.
After a consultation between the microsurgeon and orthopedic traumatologist with specialists, it was determined that the patient was forced to remove the entire finger on the right hand due to complete crushing.
Three days after the accident, Dr. Tai said that by the morning of Aug. 9, the patient's condition was relatively stable. However, the patient's limb function is limited, especially the working capacity of the right hand is almost gone.
The patient's husband said the accident happened when Ms. T.T.C., 37, from Bac Giang was home alone. The phone ran out of battery, the patient plugged in and charged while using it when it suddenly exploded. The phone used by the wife is also unknown type and origin.
"At this time I was at home 10km from my grandmother's house, when I heard the news, ran to the hospital, I was stunned, shocked by the serious injuries on her body," the patient's husband said.
According to Viet Duc Hospital, each year the hospital receives about 2-3 patients injured because of the habit of using the phone while charging, but this is the most severe case, affecting the function of many organs. Doctors recommend that people absolutely should not use their phones while plugged in fixed chargers or power banks.
Dr. Tai warned that accidents that occur while using the phone while charging are very dangerous. In the past 2 years, Viet Duc Hospital has received at least 5 cases of serious injuries caused by exploding phones when used while charging. Many accidents caused by exploding phones while charging cause amputations, facial burns, and general body injuries.
Therefore, the doctor recommends that people should use quality phone chargers, absolutely do not use the phone while charging to avoid problems.
Today, many smartphones, especially high-end models, are often equipped with a metal shell or frame, both making the product solid and adding aesthetics to the product. However, in practice, this design can be dangerous for users, because if the charging source leaks, current can travel through the metal shell or frame and if the user is unaware, it can be electrocuted when touching the charging phone.
One of the other causes of unsafe incidents when users charge while using the phone is to buy poor quality devices that lead to heat accumulation, electrical leakage and electric shock at any time.
To be safe, users plug the charging cord into the phone, then plug in the charger and power outlet, which will help avoid touching the phone when the cord has power, which can be shocked if the power leaks.
In addition, users should use genuine accessories, absolutely do not use charging cords of unknown origin. If you experience an electric shock when touching a plugged in mobile device, you should immediately disconnect the charging source to avoid fire accidents, and take the device to well-known phone sales establishments for inspection.
