A teacher said that in the past, there was a distinction between i and y, but now it doesn't count as spelling errors anymore. However, there are some words we use out of habit and both are accepted, it's just that the user may not be familiar with them. For example: Physics, Geography are old usage. Currently it's Physics and Geography.

Agreeing with this opinion, teacher Le Tran Dieu Thu - Master in Theory and Teaching Methods of Literature said that linguistics will accept both ways of writing. However, according to the new regulations, "i" must be written correctly.

Specifically, in Article 9 of the Regulations on spelling in general education programs and textbooks issued together with Decision 1989/QD - BGDDT dated May 25, 2018 of the Minister of Education and Training, there is refers to the way the i sound is written after the initial consonant in syllables without a middle or final consonant.

Specifically:

1. In case the i sound comes immediately after the first consonant, it is written with the letter i. For example: Hope, memory, theory, art, doctor, ratio, physics, master's degree, doctorate, dentist, beautician, contract suspension,... Do not use the "i" sound. at the beginning of the sound and behind it is the consonant. For example: Silent, printing. If it is the final position of the sound (except Uy, ay, AY), then write i (for example: lui luong, jasmine).

2. In case the syllable containing the sound i is a proper name, write that proper name. For example: Tuong Vy, Vi Van Dinh, Nguyen Vy, Thy Ngoc, Thuy Vi,...

3. Based on the regulations, the document and contract shall be used in cases other than those mentioned above:

- If standing alone, write y (medical, thoughts).

- If it comes after the middle sound u, write y (thinking, regulation).

- If the diphthong iê comes at the beginning of the word, write y (peaceful, loving).

- If it is possible to use both i and y without changing the meaning, we will use i.

For example: Regulations, spinal cord, fidelity, contract cancellation, medal,...

In practice, there are many other cases where writing "i" or "y" is still accepted, for example: United States - United States, America - America, National Flag - National Flag, anniversary - anniversary, cup kiss - divorce, reason - reason, thriller - thriller,...
