Phuong Quang is loved by Cai Liang fans because of his deep voice, steady acting style with shapes in heroic characters full of mettle or sympathy for his roles in the later period.
Referring to him, the audience still cannot forget King Riem in Caesar, Eight Healthy in The Urban People, Five Treasures in Love and Answers or Nguyen Hue in The Sound of Rach Rong Waves... But now, everything remains in the past when the artist has passed away.
On July 13, 2018, artist Phuong Quang died at his home in District 7, HCMC, after years of brain atrophy. Despite knowing his health condition, many friends and artists were shocked when they heard that he had left the temporary realm.
Who is Phuong Quang?
Dr. Phuong Quang's real name is To Van Quang, born in 1942 in Di An, Binh Duong. In 1960, he went to Saigon to find musician Van Co, who is from the same hometown and a relative, to apply for an apprenticeship. He followed the musician for a while and then joined the Jincheng, Kim Chan and the main duo.
Just two years after joining the Golden Chan troupe, he won the prestigious Thanh Tam Award for the role of Ky Thanh Lang, the play What Love for You in 1966 - the same year as Thanh Nga, Thanh Du, Phuong Lien. Snow White rated Phuong Quang as having the best Southern accent, only after the late singer Ut Tra Wen.
After 1975, he returned to Cai Luong Theater Tran Huu Trang (HCMC). There, he had the role of King Riem in Caesar. Phuong Quang and Thanh Vy used to be the bright duo of the Cai Luong stage in the 1980s.
For colleagues, the last thing about Phuong Quang is his gentle smile, bright voice, slow Southern style. When learning of his death, artist Thanh Vy reminisced about the time when the two were newly attached to Tran Huu Trang Theater. At that time, she came in from the North, still strange, shy with her manners, chatting with new colleagues. Fang Quang helped her blur the distance and integrate into the singing troupe faster.
When Thanh Vy met Phuong Quang, he was already a shining star with the Thanh Tam Award. However, he did not have any gestures or words to appear senior, but diligently polished her every line, ready to stop editing when the two duet episodes did not work out.
His love for more than 40 years with his wife earned him the respect of his friends and audiences
People's Representative Snow White called the marriage of Phuong Quang and his wife one of the most enduring romances of the Southern theater village, besides the late Thanh Sang and his wife.
Fate led Fang Guang to marry Jin Xiang, who was not interested in reform liang. At first, she followed some friends into the city television station. Meeting him, she said politely. Impressed with the girl's simplicity, Fang Guang secretly relaxed. A few months later, he invited her to see the reform. In 1973, they got married, had two children, a son and a girl. From disliking reform, she became a fan, following him from north to south for thousands of performances. When he struggled with his profession, she switched jobs from accounting to merchandising, running around every meal. "Thanks to his strong marriage, his personal life has never once caused a stir," Snow White said.
Phuong Quang's son, Mr. Quang Bao, said the late artist's kindness and always thinking for others was deeply ingrained in his blood, even when he was seriously ill. In the early 2000s, Phuong Quang struggled to treat liver disease. After recovering, his brain began to damage, gradually atrophied as a side effect of the drug. Knowing that his illness was not going anywhere, he and his wife applied for body donation. The late artist and his wife, who understood the concept of birth and death, only wished to continue contributing to society after their death. His and his wife's wishes were unanimously agreed with by their children.
Talking about artist Phuong Quang's decision to donate his body, Mr. Quang Bao said: "When my father decided to donate his body, the family easily accepted it, because the family understood the purpose and meaning of this. My father always wanted to contribute, even at the end of his life. That's also his nature â to sacrifice but not for rights."
"My sister and I both know our father's character. He lived a simple, frugal life, always yielding to everyone. Before he died, he still wanted his death to be able to serve life," Bao added.
Fang Guang's chivalrous, macho personality also entered his lifelong roles. For a long time, the late artist nailed the roles of kings, majestic generals, loyal through his physique, general walking steadily with a strong and humming voice.
Once at his peak, he also repeatedly recognized the blight of his singing career. He discouraged his two children from singing. From a young age, his children set a goal to have a college degree. As an adult, the eldest daughter worked for a company in Ho Chi Minh City, the son followed the profession of teaching foreign languages.
In the last years of his life, when Fang Quang suffered from memory problems, his son hid him from sneaking into the non-formal intermediate system of the Tran Huu Trang Reform Theater. He just graduated a few days ago. At the end of his life, Fang Guang did not know that his son would succeed him. Mr. Quang Bao wants to continue his father's singing business as a side hustle, because for his family, singing is already a career.
