In recent days, social media has been spreading information related to the degree of People's Artist Bach Tuyet. One person said that the artist's name could not be found on the list of alumni of RADA (Royal Academy of Dramatic Art), suspecting that her doctorate is fake.
Dr. Luke Robinson, PhD in Film and Media from the University of Sussex (UK), confirmed that the image of the diploma provided by People's Artist Bach Tuyet is not a standard Doctorate (PhD) certificate.
"It could be an honorary doctorate. But I have to say I don't know if there's a standard format for that kind of certification. I've never seen anything like it before," said Dr. Luke Robinson.
According to Dr Luke Robinson, the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) has never awarded a PhD, either now or in 1995.
"They have honorary members, but I don't think they give out honorary doctorates. So the whole thing is quite strange," Dr Luke Robinson stressed.
In response to the false rumors, the People's Artist has given an official response.
According to the documents the female artist sent to the media, her study process: From 1991-1995, People's Artist Bach Tuyet was accepted to study at RADA. In October 1995, People's Artist Bach Tuyet defended her thesis "The adaptation of traditional folk theater arts of Southeast Asian countries".
After studying 10 subjects and achieving the required total of 124 hours of study and practice, in October 1995, People's Artist Bach Tuyet defended her thesis "The adaptation of traditional folk theater arts of Southeast Asian countries" and was approved by the Thesis Evaluation Council. During her studies, People's Artist Bach Tuyet reported to and received attention from the Vietnamese Embassy in London.
After People's Artist Bach Tuyet completed her thesis defense, the Vietnamese Embassy in London (UK) sent a dispatch to the Ministry of Culture and Information and the Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee, confirming that "During her time in London, she - People's Artist Bach Tuyet - had regular contact with the Embassy, conducted serious research and had a good relationship with the school."
After returning home, People's Artist Bach Tuyet sent a report on her study process and thesis defense to the Ministry of Culture and Information, Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee, Ho Chi Minh City Department of Culture and Information, Ho Chi Minh City Theater Association, and sent her thesis to the Director of the Department of Culture and Information and the General Secretary of the Ho Chi Minh City Theater Association at that time.
The management of People's Artist Bach Tuyet said that the diploma signed by the Director of RADA, Mr. Nicolas Barter, recognizing Nguyen Thi Bach Tuyet's doctoral thesis is a certificate of 10 subjects with 124 hours from the British Academy of Dramatic Art.
Because she jointly defended her thesis at the National Institute of Theatre and Film in Sofia (Bulgaria), the Institute awarded her a doctorate (number 24248) on August 15, 1996 to artist Bach Tuyet.
On October 31, 1995, the Vietnamese Embassy in the UK and Bulgaria sent a dispatch to the Ministry of Culture and Information and the Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee confirming that artist Bach Tuyet had defended the above thesis and was highly appreciated by members of RADA and Sofia (Bulgaria).
The representative of People's Artist Bach Tuyet responded further: "The effort to study an art program at a prestigious Drama Academy abroad, for a national artist, is nothing more than the goal of better understanding and promoting the valuable assets of the Cai Luong theater genre in particular, and national culture in general, to the public in all regions. As well as, from there, it is possible to enrich the source of creativity, renew the Cai Luong art in the true spirit of this Southern theater genre."
People's Artist Bach Tuyet is considered a big name in the Cai Luong stage, once called "the treasure of Cai Luong". Talking about her career, the female artist has many famous roles in Doi Co Luu, Ngua Doi Huong Phan... and has also collaborated with many young artists such as Hoang Dung, Wowy... Not long ago, artist Bach Tuyet was selected by Forbes in the top 50 most influential women over 50 years old in Asia.
