Meritorious Artist Minh Phuc - Mothe.r of People's Artist Tu Long, 2 surgeries, 11 chemotherapy sessions

Meritorious Artist Minh Phuc is loved by many people for her talent and dedication to Vietnamese art. She is also the mothe.r - the one who passed on her career and passion to her son, People's Artist Tu Long.

Artist Minh Phuc (real name Nguyen Thi Phuc) was born in 1949, mothe.r of People's Artist Tu Long received the title of Meritorious Artist at the ag.e of 75 in early 2024, during the 10th artist title conferment ceremony. Meritorious Artist Minh Phuc was born into a family with a tradition of artistic activities in Bac Ninh, his father was a drummer of the Vietnam Cheo Theater, his siblings all studied at the University of Theater and Cinema, and worked as artists.

Meritorious Artist Minh Phuc answered the press on the day he received the noble title.

To date, Meritorious Artist Minh Phuc has been associated with Quan Ho art for 60 years. She is the first artist of the Bac Ninh Quan Ho Folk Song Troupe. In addition to her dedication to the profession recognized by the audience, Meritorious Artist Minh Phuc is also famous for being the biological mothe.r of People's Artist Tu Long.

At the ag.e of U80, she was awarded the title of Meritorious Artist, the veteran artist of the Quan Ho village was very moved. The artist said: "My family has a husband who is a Meritorious Artist, a son who is a People's Artist. That makes me so proud that I can't put it into words. As a wif.e and a mothe.r, I am very happy. At this ag.e, I don't expect anything more. Receiving the title at this ag.e is an honor that makes me extremely proud and honored."

In that joy, when reminded of her son's praise for her singing, Meritorious Artist Minh Phuc was very modest and said that the next generation still does everything better than her. Despite this, she still has her own pride in personally collecting the oldest Quan Ho works.

"What I am most proud of is that I have preserved the ancient culture of Quan Ho. Now I am the only one who can write books with 400-500 songs that specifically record the origin and origin of each village, each elder in each specific period. Being able to do that makes me no longer regret my role as a student recording what previous generations have learned," Meritorious Artist Minh Phuc shared.

Meritorious Artist Minh Phuc's husband is Meritorious Artist Tu Lam, stage name Hai Lam, and is a famous Quan Ho singer in Bac Ninh. He is considered one of the first people to build the Bac Ninh Quan Ho folk song troupe (now the Bac Ninh Quan Ho Folk Song Theatre). Meritorious Artist Tu Lam was awarded the title at the same time as his son, People's Artist Tu Long in 2016.

Meritorious Artist Minh Phuc and his wif.e were both members of the first generation of Bac Ninh Quan Ho Folk Song Troupe. They got married after two years of living and working together. They performed for soldiers and people during the resistance war against America.

Of the three children of the two artists, only the eldest son Tu Long followed in his parents' footsteps. His parents once discouraged him from studying art because the profession was too hard, but Tu Long still had a passion for the stage and achieved many achievements in his career, making his parents proud.

People's Artist Tu Long studied carpentry and worked as a motorbike taxi driver, planning to go abroad to work as an export laborer, but in the end he still studied at the University of Theater and Cinema and then became a big name in the Vietnamese art world.

He is loved by the audience through his roles in Tao Quan, and is currently the Director of the Army Cheo Theater.

The male artist once said that his mothe.r loved her job very much, sang Quan Ho well, and that he himself could only sing "one thousandth of what my mothe.r sang". On the occasion of Meritorious Artist Minh Phuc's 72nd birthday, Tu Long confided: "I have strived to achieve what I have today, also to dedicate it to my mothe.r. She will be happy and proud of her son".

Old ag.e, forget illness and live optimistically

In May 2021, People's Artist Tu Long revealed that his mothe.r had cancer for 3 years and had to have one kidney removed, but surprised doctors with her quick recovery thanks to her optimistic spirit when fightin.g the disease.

Meritorious Artist Minh Phuc also said that she had to undergo surgery twice and chemotherapy 11 times, but "she is still alive thanks to her children". There was a period when the female artist lost more than 10kg and lost all her hair due to continuous chemotherapy, but the female artist remained resilient and optimistic, never complaining to her family. Having gone through life and deat.h, Meritorious Artist Minh Phuc cherishes time even more and lives happily every day.

She told Vietnamnet: "I was terminally ill, had two surgeries, and 11 chemotherapy sessions, but honestly I didn't think about the disease at all. Long told me that he had never seen anyone in as much pai.n or illness as his mothe.r, but I always felt normal and didn't care about life or deat.h."

Talking about the motivation to live and overcome the serious illness, Meritorious Artist Minh Phuc shared that it was thanks to the love and care from his family, specifically his son - People's Artist Tu Long. "Long is a son who is devoted to his parents. I have been sick a lot. I had a kidney removed and the cancer spread, had to undergo surgery twice, and chemotherapy 11 times, but I am still alive thanks to my son."

Talking about her famous son, she revealed: "In the unit, because it is a military environment, Tu Long is very strict and disciplined. But at home, Long is a very thoughtful and emotional person, wholeheartedly taking care of his parents, wif.e and children.

Long is not only thoughtful about his parents mentally but also materially. I also thank him for always being devoted to his parents. Long is very thoughtful, always taking care of every pill, milk box, and daily routine for his mothe.r. I just follow my son's example, so I can say that I live for my son," Meritorious Artist Minh Phuc said.

She told Dan Viet newspaper: "I just do what my children advise me to do, so I can say I live for them. For many years now, I have just lived calmly. Whether I live or di.e, I no longer care."

Sharing about his marriage with Meritorious Artist Tu Lam, Meritorious Artist Minh Phuc said: "We have been together for more than 50 years thanks to our shared love of art. We always respect, share, and encourage each other in life."

At the ag.e of U80, the artist couple lives with their youngest son in Bac Ninh, and has the opportunity to come to Hanoi to visit the family of People's Artist Tu Long. Meritorious Artist Minh Phuc is often invited to sing at many festivals and teaches young students because she does not want to be stagnant or too idle. If she has free time, she will sit down and copy folk tunes to serve as documents for the next generation. Meritorious Artist Minh Phuc has a peaceful old ag.e with her extended family. She also forgets her illness to live a more optimistic and happy life.
