Minh Hoang "The Scent of Coriander": After cancer surgery, the doctor sent him home, now living in a foreign country

Minh Hoang has been a familiar face to audiences for the past 40 years in the field of stage and television. For many years, he temporarily withdrew to rest, but after receiving an earnest invitation from People's Artist Hong Van, he broke the rules and returned.

Artist Minh Hoang was born in 1955 in Ho Chi Minh City. At the age of 18, after passing the baccalaureate exam, he entered Law School with the expectation of both himself and his family to become a lawyer, following in his father's footsteps.

While he was passionate about studying law, one day, a friend invited him to take the exam for the National School of Music and Drama. He took the exam partly for fun and partly out of curiosity. Unexpectedly, he passed. So he studied at both schools with the spirit of studying acting for fun and studying law mainly for his future career.

Because of that ideology, he studied drama in a very "amateur" way. In the morning he studied law at school, at noon he switched to drama and in the afternoon. His parents knew, they were also upset because they were afraid of the saying "singing and singing are of no class", but because their son was still doing well in both subjects, they gradually accepted it.

Then, acting career came into the life of the law student like an arrangement of fate, of destiny that no one could have predicted.

After liberation, the Law School was abolished, and the Music and Drama Departments were taken over. Drama students at that time continued to be trained in the transfer system to graduate 2 years later.

While many graduates had to quit their jobs or go far away, Minh Hoang was kept at the school as a teaching assistant. After a while of teaching, he felt that this job was not suitable so he applied to join the Cuu Long Giang troupe - the predecessor of the Southern Drama Troupe.

During that period, the State had many preferential policies for artists, thanks to which he could help his parents in taking care of his younger siblings.

From following the profession for fun, then fate pushed him, the profession chose him without him knowing, and then day by day, month by month, year by year, he loved the profession more and more. The profession seeped into his blood, naturally in every breath, and then when talking about the profession, artist Minh Hoang said, it is a profession that he has always cherished for the past 50 years.

He confided in the People's Public Security newspaper: "I never had the thought of getting rich or becoming famous for my profession. Maybe, when I say this, many young people today don't believe it. But, in our generation, acting is both a joy and a duty.

Or maybe, the hardships of those days forged in me the warrior spirit of an artist. Or is it because acting has been with me from the most beautiful days until my hair started to turn gray? What I am most proud of is that I have lived and devoted my whole life to acting."

With 50 years of experience, artist Minh Hoang has been associated with many theater stages such as Idecaf, Hong Van, 5B Vo Van Tan with many plays loved by audiences.

In terms of television and cinema, he is especially loved through the film "The Scent of Coriander" and most recently the film project "The House is Not for Sale". Although he does not play many leading roles, his characters always leave a deep impression on viewers.

Although he is a well-known and loved face, when looking back on his career journey, he still regrets not being able to reach further.

He confided: "I've been doing theater all my life, but now theater is dying. Movies are doing well, but it seems like luck, virtual value. I'm just glad that we can make a living from this profession, and the audience is willing to watch, but we have to work hard to improve the quality."

Nearly 3 years ago, artist Minh Hoang announced his retirement and moved to the US to live with his daughter. He said: "It was due to circumstances. At that time, I felt so sorry for my daughter's hardships that I moved to the US to share with her."

In 2024, his daughter got married and moved out with her husband, leaving him and his wife to live in a large house with everything they needed but... "so sad". All day long, they went in and out, watering the plants, listening to music, watching TV until they went to bed. And then the next day, it was the same thing all over again.

After a few months, the grandparents were sad and bought tickets to fly back to Vietnam to visit for a few months, travel here and there, meet friends and colleagues. Hearing that he was coming back, People's Artist Hong Van "kidnapped" him to perform on stage. But it was fun. He said, doing this job, it's hard to stop. God still gave him health, colleagues still love him and invite him, how can he refuse.

Recently, he accepted to participate in the movie "The Yin Yang Road". The movie was filmed on a mountain pass, with lots of fog and low temperatures. There were days when he was sprayed with water from 11am to 5-6pm. After filming, he got sick and had to take medicine, but he still worked hard on his job.

Last year, he was diagnosed with lung cancer. "The doctor in the US had me on the operating table, with wires and needles stuck all over my body, but at the last minute, the doctor decided not to operate and sent me home for observation. If I had operated, I would have had to remove a quarter of my lung," he told the newspaper Doi Song Phap Luat.

Over the past year, he went for a routine check-up and the tumor did not grow. He was overjoyed and said, "It's probably benign." At 70 years old, he lives optimistically, accepting whatever comes, not afraid of anything anymore. The luckiest thing for him is that his wife has always been by his side, from the time he was healthy until he was old. The old couple took care of each other and became closer and closer.
