The story of a "hero" who, fearlessly, with his teammates, jumped into the raging flood to stop two derelict ships drifting on the Red River, which were at risk of colliding and causing serious damage to the bridge over the river.
Accordingly, the hero mentioned is Mr. Nguyen Quoc Dai with 2 people from the same village, Mr. Vu Van Bien and Mr. Vu Van Tuyen, using a small boat to go upstream to search for and bring the 2 ships to shore. Mr. Dai said, this was probably fate. At around 8:00 p.m. on September 9, I was asked by a friend to go to the river to tie up a sand ship that was at risk of having its cable broken. When I arrived at the riverbank, I met 2 police officers who were there to inform me about the incident.
The two abandoned ships were very large and could cause serious damage to the railway bridge and collapse the Pho Lu road bridge. Without much thought, I and two villagers, Vu Van Bien and Vu Van Tuyen, decided to take on the task. We discussed and agreed on a plan to use a small boat to overcome the flood and go upstream on the Red River to search for the two drifting ships.
Arriving at My bridge area (border of Thai Nien commune and Pho Lu town), we discovered 2 ships with black iron blocks rushing along the flood water. Regardless of the danger, I shouted loudly to Mr. Bien and Mr. Tuyen to turn the boat around, trying to get as close as possible to the drifting ship so that I could jump over there.
Because the two ships were too big, Mr. Dai's boat was small, so if he got too close he could be thrown off, so the only way left was to "get close and jump over", Mr. Dai asserted.
In the middle of the night, Dai's "fated jump" was successful. Quickly checking both ships that were tightly anchored together, Dai discovered that there was no one on board, and it might even have been abandoned for a long time because there were many weeds growing on it.
How to control the two iron blocks in the flood water so as not to crash into the pier 2 of Pho Lu bridge is the question that Mr. Dai is most concerned about. His main job is driving a car for construction projects, combined with his experience on the river, knowledge of machinery and ships, so a few minutes later, Mr. Dai was able to start one of the two drifting ships.
Having mastered the vehicle, Mr. Dai slowed down the boat so that Mr. Bien and Mr. Tuyen could board the boat to help him safely cross the Pho Lu bridge. "It was dark at night, and I had never driven such a large boat before, and the two boats stuck together in the midst of raging floodwaters. At first, I was clumsy and shaking, but then I told myself to stay calm and focused, and finally my "teammates" and I were able to bring it to shore," Mr. Dai recalled.
At around 11 p.m., after 2 hours of struggling with two large drifting ships, finally Mr. Dai, Mr. Bien, and Mr. Tuyen - the heroes - overcame the raging flood waters on the Red River to tow and control the vehicles safely across two bridges, bringing them to shore at An Thang village, Son Ha commune.
Previously, the professional agencies of Lao Cai and Yen Bai provinces had issued warnings about the danger to the river bridge project from two large drifting ships. While there was no optimal solution, hero Nguyen Quoc Dai and two colleagues braved the flood waters to track down, control and steer the two ships through the two bridges, bringing them safely to shore.
Lieutenant Colonel Nguyen Thanh Binh, Deputy Head of Bao Thang District Police, Lao Cai, said that on September 9, the District Police received information about two large ships tied together drifting on the Red River. This vehicle could impact and damage the bridge across the river. The unit immediately deployed working groups to assess the situation and develop a plan to control the drifting ships, ensuring traffic on the railway bridge and Pho Lu bridge.
"The actions of Mr. Dai, Mr. Bien and Mr. Tuyen demonstrated their bravery and self-sacrifice for the community... To proactively prevent the drifting ship from crashing into other bridges and structures on the river, the Lao Cai Provincial Police Department has directed forces to coordinate with experienced crew members and fishermen to use ropes to tie the ship to a stable position to ensure safety," said Lieutenant Colonel Nguyen Thanh Binh.
