After eating, the man, before leaving the restaurant, left at the table 13 million VND in tips. However, he was suddenly called back by the waiter, asking for another 13 million to leave.
Accordingly, the diner is a successful Italian businessman, recently moved to Saint-Tropez to visit tourism. During his stay, he went to a luxurious and popular restaurant here for a meal. After eating, he left some money and left but was chased all the way to the parking lot of the popular resort in Saint-Tropez (Var department, southeastern France) and said that 500 euros (about 13 million VND) of tips was too little.
Notably, he also demanded that the guest return to the restaurant, paying double the amount, which means 1,000 euros, French newspaper Nice Matin reported. The businessman's friend said he initially thought the â¬500 he left behind was generous. Instead of being thanked, however, he was blamed for "this money is nowhere to be seen."
"The waiter told him that the tip was impervious and he could still try a little harder to tip â¬1,000 to reach 20% of the total amount of his bill," the businessman's friend added. The actions of a part of the restaurant department angered the man and strongly criticized. "I'll never step foot in here again," he said.
In fact, the case of the Italian businessman is not uncommon, as some seaside restaurants in France often ask for a minimum tip of 1,500 Euros (39 million). Moreover, at some high-end restaurants on the French Riviera, customers must tip at least 10,000 Euros after dining. Some restaurants allow staff to create a "blacklist of customers who do not tip", to screen guests based on their financial ability.
After the news of the incident spread, it caused a wave of discussion and controversy on online forums, prompting local authorities to step in. It is even necessary to plan to re-regulate the tipping level and norms for tips to avoid similar situations.
The mayor of Saint-Tropez recently called on restaurant owners to hold a meeting together to prevent and end such controversy and change the way customers are received in a more formal way.
It is known that tipping culture comes from Europe and has a not very nice initial meaning. Accordingly, a tip is an extra deposit that a customer spends on his service staff in a restaurant or hotel, this amount is not included in the bill of payment. The tip is meant as a thank you for the good service style or delicious food that gives guests satisfaction.
In many countries, some hotel, service and restaurant workers may only be paid a basic living wage, and they need to rely on tips to make ends meet. That's why countries around the world are very important about tipping. In Asia, on the other hand, tipping can be seen as an act of disrespect to employees.
Because Asia and the South Pacific do not prevail this culture, tipping is easily rejected and may be seen as offensive or belittling in some countries in these two regions. Japanese culture highly values dedication and dedication in work. Therefore, they always set the highest standards when providing services and do not feel the need to receive money to be considered good service.
In Singapore, tipping may not make any difference to the staff, as the restaurant owner will keep the money. In Myanmar, and Taipei, tipping is not necessary. However, due to the wave of tourism, countries such as China, Cambodia, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam have gradually become more open to receiving tips. In Australia and New Zealand, waiters and drivers don't expect tips, but they'll be happy if you round up the bill.
In general, tipping customs may change as tourism grows and the economy picks up. If you're not sure whether to tip while traveling in certain countries, ask the waitress and you'll be clear.
