The dancing tree, also known internationally as Codariocalyx motorius. In Vietnam, dance trees are also known as paddy, spinach, and spinach beans. The dancing tree is an Asian tropical shrub belonging to the Fabaceae legume family. They can be grown in many places because they are easy to care for.
The Dance Tree is mainly distributed in tropical South Asia and Southeast Asia, from India, Nepal, Myanmar to southern China, down to Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Thailand, Malaysia, the Philippines, Indonesia and down to Australia.
In Vietnam, the tree has a wide distribution from North to South, including many different provinces and cities. including the provinces of Bac Giang, Lang Son, Ha Tay, Hoa Binh, Ninh Binh, Ha Nam, Thanh Hoa, Nghe An, Kon Tum, Gia Lai, Dak Lak, Lam Dong, Ninh Thuan, Binh Duong, Dong Nai and Ba Ria - Vung Tau.
The Dance Tree is a perennial plant, light-loving, drought-tolerant, often growing on sandy or basalt-red soils. It can grow scattered or form small clusters, often appearing with small shrubs, grassy beds in pine forests, sparse forest edges, shrub hills, or rice banks.
According to scientists, the dancing tree is a vertical, branched, mature shrub up to 1.5m high. The branches are cylindrical, the leaves have 1-3 oblong leaflets, 2 leaflets are narrow at the bottom, the leaflets in the middle are the largest, 5.5-10cm long, 1-2.5cm wide. The leaves are oval-shaped, at the base heart-shaped or slightly rounded. The leaves have a fine layer of hairs on the top, more hairs on the bottom, and the tip of the leaf is blunt and pointed.
The plant produces single inflorescences, with pinkish-purple flowers, the fruit has a whole upper edge, the lower edge is notched, slightly curved, divided into 8 nodes, each node contains only 1 seed, the burner has a rounded edge and a straight edge. The plant usually blooms from August to November every year.
The unique feature of this tree is that whenever it hears music, its leaves will "dance" even though there is no wind. In addition, the dance tree can move if the temperature is more than 20 degrees Celsius, even if there is no sound around.
Regarding this mechanism, According to the research of scientists, there are two hypotheses proposed to explain this particular ability. First, the tree is capable of moving at a speed sufficient to be recognized by the naked eye. Scientists believe this may be a survival strategy, where plants move to optimize the amount of light they receive, by moving in the direction of the sun.
Each leaf of the dancing plant has a joint, which helps them move flexibly to areas with more sunlight. In particular, to reduce the energy consumed when moving, this plant is optimized by adding 2 small leaflets at the base to each large leaf. These small leaflets move in an elliptical line, while sampling the intensity of sunlight and directing the large leaf to the region with the strongest intensity.
Second, this strange phenomenon can be a preventive measure for pests. The Dance Tree "dances" to mimic the movement of butterflies, possibly with the aim of preventing them from laying eggs on the leaves.
This mechanism makes many people joke that this is a plant for music lovers. On the other hand, many netizens also compare this plant with dancing TikTokers such as: Xuan Ca, Ciin, Quynh bei... because they create unique choreography from music.
It is known that the Dance Tree is not only able to "dance" when listening to music, but also helps reduce fever, relieve abdominal pain, eye pain, neck pain, joint pain, dermatitis, and reduce insomnia symptoms.
In addition, the substances contained in the Thoc Lep plant also have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. The seeds of this plant are known for their ability to effectively treat back pain.
It can be seen that it is not only a unique phenomenon but also a precious herbal source with the potential to cure many diseases in medicine. The unique properties of this herb are part of the treasure of Vietnamese folk medicine.
However, the Dance Tree is little known and there are not many in-depth studies on its pharmacological properties. Therefore, before use, users should consult a medical professional to ensure safety and effectiveness during treatment, and avoid unwanted effects that may appear due to the use of medicinal plants.
